Lady Wave tune
up skills in four way scrimmage
By George Starks
GREENVILLE- When it comes to sports, scrimmages are designed for two
purposes.
They will reveal a team’s strong suites and it weaknesses.
With less than five practices in the books, Greenville coach Lori Davis
seen plenty in a four way scrimmage with Southeastern, Northwestern and
host Arcanum.
“This was a great time for this kind of scrimmage,” said Davis. “We had
essentially four and a half practices coming into this with a very
young team. So to see them move with each other on the court and to
cover and be as scrappy as they were, yes, it was a good time to have
it.”
When it came to the positives on the night, Davis was quick to point a
few things out.
“I saw a team that gelled very quickly,” Davis quipped. “They played
defense well and came out and dominated the net early. They stopped
some strong hitters. Coming off a season a year ago with six seniors
that was pretty strong and dominated. I’ve got kiddo that came in here
that wasn’t sure of their timing in hitting. I have a freshman middle
hitter that has never been a middle hitter. She has bonded with my
junior and she’s finding it’s fun to play that position. We attacked
the net and I’m happy with that.”
After talking about the play at the net, Davis then touched on her back
row play.
“Our back row play was really good as far as scrappiness,” said Davis.
“We have to learn to control our passing better. That is something we
are focusing on from last year. With these kids coming out against real
competition and not just a coach hitting at them or a free ball, this
was a good test for them.”
With the positives being touched, Davis talk about the things that
needed the most improvement.
“We need to learn to serve more consistently,” Davis pointed out. “We
have incredibly strong servers and those that are learning to jump
serve. I want to be able to pair that jump serve with the strength.”
With Davis pointing out the good and the not so good, there was the
aspect of ball placement that came into play.
“We focus on this even in practice,” Davis said. “If the setter isn’t
in the prime spot she has to know where to place the ball for the best
selection. Volleyball is one of those amazing sports that’s not ever
just perfect. We were able to hit the holes when we put the ball over
the net. We have some smart players out there.”
With the start of the season looming large, Davis admitted that her
kids have a short time and a long way to go.
“We do have a long way to go but we have an entire team of girls that
love volleyball and they want to learn,” Davis said in conclusion.
“Even when they know their position, they want to learn more.”
Greenville will open on the road at Beavercreek on August 21.
