Ansonia
finishes third in Burkett
By George Starks
NEW MADISON- After falling to Arcanum Friday, 73-51 in the opening game
of the 27th annual Bill Burkett Tournament, the Ansonia Lady Trojans
rebounded on Saturday with a 57-28 victory over Franklin Monroe.
Getting the win put the Tigers at 1-1 on the season but the third place
finish was a repeat of a year ago.
With a very young team (only two seniors) the Tigers were able to hold
their own against the higher seeded Arcanum.
In that opening game, the Tigers trailed 16-12 after one quarter and
33-29 at the break.
At the end of three quarters, the Tigers trailed 53-38 and a 15 point
lead ended up being a 22 point loss.
“We’re starting to come together,” said Ansonia coach Jim Bolin. “We
still have a little bit of work to do but right now, we are looking to
create some chemistry and go out and play up to our potential every
night.”
Saturday’s consolation game was never in doubt as the Tigers led at all
the breaks, 16-4, 40-14 and 49-20 before posting the 57-28 victory.
“When you have a big lead like we did, sometimes it’s had to stay
focused,” Bolin stated. “At the same time, we pretty much had the game
in hand. We play Arcanum tough at their place last year and actually
had a chance to win it. We played them tough last night so we are
starting to come together.”
Looking back to a year ago, Bolin is missing a huge piece of his team.
“We lost Katie Fisher and you don’t replace a player like her,” Bolin
pointed out. “She was a leader on and off the floor and we need to
create some more of that on this for this ball club here.”
Sophomore Lydia Sink stepped up for the Tigers, scoring 21 against the
Trojans and back that game up with another 21 Saturday against the Jets.
“Lydia started for me last year and is a real nice player,” said Bolin.
“Lydia has come a long way this year and we’re hoping she will become
more mature and become a leader for this team. I’m pleased with her
play and her attitude this year.”
Bolin and the Tigers will face the Jets again Thursday at FM in a Cross
County Conference game.
