Looking back on
a fun year
By George Starks
DARKE COUNTY- With 2014 coming to a quick close, I've had some time to
reflect on a few things in sports.
Several schools made solid runs in the post season at the prep level.
While Darke County hasn't had a lot to crow about in football,
basketball has been another story.
With high expectations, the 2014 basketball season started off with a
bang.
Tri-Village won the Burkett in November of 2013 by topping Arcanum but
the Trojans made a statement in the conference game at Tri-Village that
year and Rachel Fearon and the Lady Trojans were all of a sudden the
team to beat.
Fearon's team won the sectional that year but fell in the district to
Versailles.
Stonebreaker and the Tigers roared through the post season and a trip
to the state.
On the boys side of the ledger, it was Tri-Village, Franklin Monroe and
Versailles that were on the top of everyone’s list to make a possible
trip to Columbus.
At Versailles, then junior Kyle Ahrens, suffered a severely broken leg
in the title game of the holiday tournament at Versailles.
Later that season, Versailles suffered another loss as Damien Winner
went down.
Versailles had a great run but without two of its big Tigers the run
fell short.
In D-IV, Bethel upended the Jets run for a conference title at the
Hangar but just two weeks sooner, the Bees threatened Tri-Village at
the Battleground.
In what went down as the biggest thriller of the season, the Pats, on a
last minute shot by Tyler VanWinkle, got TV into a overtime situation
and the Pats were able to gain the victory.
It seemed Tri-Village and Franklin Monroe were once again on a
collision course but this time it was the sectionals, possibly in the
regionals.
The Patriots made it through to state but the Jets had a mid-air
collision as the Eagles of Troy Christian knocked them out in the
sectional finals.
With the Jets season finished, the Pats got to the final four before
falling to the wayside.
Versailles and Greenville waged their war on the wrestling mat with
Versailles once again reigning supreme on the mat.
With the winter months gone, our attention once again turned to spring
sports and most of all, track and softball.
With Versailles track once again leading the way in the county, it was
Lady Wave Softball that was capturing the spotlight.
Greenville was once again cutting through the competition like a hot
knife through butter.
Winning another sectional was seen as just a stepping stone for
Greenville as another run to Akron looked to be in the cards.
That dream was shattered in the districts and a trip had to be
postponed for another year.
Already this year has seen some outstanding play and plenty of memories.
Greenville did finish .500 and was second the GWOC North, losing only
to Trotwood.
Arcanum junior Daniel O'Donnell went over 1,000 yard mark in rushing
against Mississinawa Valley and in its homecoming game, Arcanum
outpunched Ansonia and O'Donnell set a school record with an 85 yard
scoring run.
On the soccer field, Franklin Monroe added another sectional to its
list of winning teams while Greenville suffered through another dismal
year.
Already, basketball season has left its mark on me with the tribute
given to Mitch McCabe and Joanne Stocksdale recently at the Hangar.
Those two stories ran in CNO sports Saturday.
Again, with the help of my trusty sidekick and grandson, Dylan Knoop,
we have amassed some pretty good photos that can be viewed on our
website, countynewsonline.org.
Click onto the CNO Sports Photo link under Sports and all photos can be
viewed.
While we do not sell our photos, we do accept donations as we are a
non-profit organization.
We give out many scholarships at the end of the school year and all
monies donated will go into that senior scribes scholarship fund.
If you wish to make a donation, please contact County News Online at
countynewsonline@gmail.com or me at g_allen_s@yahoo.com. Or mail your
donation check to County News Online, PO Box 1113, Greenville 45331.
May the 2015 year of sports bring on more great memories.
