Detroit
Falls In Shootout To Wright State
Local
Megan Galloway achieves third double-double
DETROIT
(2/22/2014) -- Six players scored in double figures and the Titans
had the offense going in the first half, but Wright State's surge in
the second half was the difference as the Titans fell to the Raiders,
102-82, on Saturday in Calihan Hall.
It
was the first time all season that Detroit had six players in double
figures as senior Senee Shearer (Detroit, Mich. / Pershing) led the
way with 17 points. Freshman Megan Galloway (Greenville, Ohio /
Greenville) powered her way to her third double-double of the season
with 16 points and a career-high 17 rebounds and five assists, while
senior Megan Hatter (Howell, Mich. / Howell) tallied 11 points and 10
rebounds for her third career double-double.
Sophomore
Tayelor McCalister (Akron, Ohio / Firestone) netted 13 points with
four rebounds and four assists and freshmen Minisha
Frederick-Childress (North Mankato, Minn. / Mankato East) and Haleigh
Ristovski (Sterling Heights Mich. / University Liggett) chipped in
with 14 and 11, respectively.
Detroit
(4-21, 1-11 HL) trailed at the beginning as Wright State (20-7, 9-3
HL) took an early 13-4 lead four minutes into the game. WSU led by
nine, 15-6, at the 15:32 mark when the red, white and blue slowly
started to get back in the game off a jumper by Shearer and a layup
by Frederick-Childress.
A
Raiders' basket made it a seven-point game, but a free throw by
Shearer and a three by Frederick-Childress had the Titans down by
just three, 17-14, with 13:50 left in the first.
UDM
kept up its scoring pace and eventually tied it at 20-20 with 11:17
remaining and the two teams would trade the lead with six ties in the
next two minutes before WSU went ahead by five, 35-30, with 7:10 on
the clock.
That
is when the Titans really put their foot on the pedal as
Frederick-Childress had a layup and McCalister hit a pair of free
throws to make it a one-point game, 35-34. Detroit would then tie it
at 38-38 on a McCalister jumper as the Titans went on a 14-4 run.
Shearer tied it at 40-40 and a three-point play by McCalister had
Detroit in front, 43-40. McCalister added another basket and a trey
by Shearer capped off the spurt as the Titans opened their largest
lead of the game, 48-42, with 2:15 left in the stanza.
Wright
State would cut it to one, 48-47, but a three by Hatter sent UDM into
the break up, 51-47.
Both
teams shot over 45% in the first half and the Titans outrebounded the
raiders, 26-21.
The
second half saw Detroit extend its lead to four, 55-51, two minutes
in, but that is when the highest scoring team in the Horizon League
turned it on going on a 21-2 run over the next eight minute to take a
72-57 lead with 9:51 left. WSU would then run its lead to as many as
24.
Detroit
ended up shooting 39.0% (30-of-77), but did outrebound Wright State,
46-44. UDM also dished out 18 assists.
The
game was part of National Girls & Women in Sports Day as over
80
girls came out to take part in a number of exciting events. The
celebration featured a variety of sports clinics at Calihan Hall,
where student-athletes from nearly all of UDM's varsity teams
provided skill instruction and hands-on demonstrations with all the
signees. The 2014 National Girls and Women in Sports Day celebrated
28 years of an annual event that brings attention to the success of
Title IX and the thousands of opportunities it has provided young
girls in the United States.
The
Titans will continue their three-game homestand on Wednesday, Feb.
26, as Detroit welcomes Valparaiso into the Motor City for a 7:00
p.m. tip.
Game
Notes:
Detroit
still leads the all-time series, 25-20… It was Galloway's third
double-double of the season and the second in the last three games…
McCalister was in double digits for the seventh-straight game…
Shearer moved into 16th place in school history with 1,157 points, 24
away from 15th place… It was the most points by Hatter since she
returned from a led injury four games ago… The 17 rebounds were the
most by a Titan since Yar Shayok had 17 against the College of
Charleston in the second round of the WBI last season… UDM had two
players with a double-double for the second time this season and the
first since Hatter and Ellisha Crosby did it against Ball State.
