Wave woes come in second quarter
By George Starks
VANDALIA- Closing out the first quarter tied with Tecumseh, 12-12,
Greenville had all the momentum going to the bench as the horn blew.
The Wave took their first and only lead with 7:23 left in the half as
Clay Guillozet hit in the paint, 14-12.
At that point, the Arrows would go on a modest 11-0 run to close out
the half with a 23-14 lead on go on to a 45-40 victory.
“In that second quarter, we just didn’t show up,” said Wave coach
Michael Bayshore. “I told the kids in the locker room that we didn’t
just get beat by anyone but we got beat by a sound basketball team.”
Greenville came in with a solid 14-7 record but struggled at literally
every aspect of the game.
Missing numerous points on second, third and even fourth chance
opportunities, Greenville had its chances.
Out of the break, the Wave started to come to life, closing to within
four, 26-22 at the 4:51 mark when Zach Coomer hit one of two from the
line. Greenville got as close as three, 28-25, with 3:46 on a trey by
Alan Tabler.
Greenville would eventually trail with eight minutes to play, 31-27.
“We fought so hard to get back in the games, I think we were gassed,”
said Bayshore. “We played hard to get back in the game but compared to
where we were a couple of years ago, this was a tough loss.”
The start of the final frame would prove to be more than Greenville had
bargained for as the Arrows scored the first six points of the frame,
leading 37-27 at the 5:08 mark.
With 1:39 left in the game, the Wave would once again close to within
four at 39-35.
Greenville would eventually close to a 42-40 score with 57.6 seconds
remaining but would never get any closer.
Free throw shooting was another problem in itself for Greenville.
Shooting a dismal three of 15 (20 percent) the Wave loss came in many
facets.
“That has been a problem for us this year,” said Bayshore. “If you go
back and look at our losses this year, it’s been free throw shooting.
Those are free points we didn’t take advantage of.”
Leading the Way for the Wave was Guillozet with 17.
