Arcanum survives huge scare
By George Starks
AECANUM- After waltzing into Tri-Village a week ago and leaving with a
57-45 Cross County Conference victory, it was all Arcanum could do to
hold off a stubborn bunch from Ansonia.
Despite a 29 point performance from senior Catey Fischer Wednesday, the
Lady Tigers could pull off the biggest upset of their 2014 season.
Hitting 11 of 19 from the line, it wasn’t enough as the Trojans held on
for a 53-48 conference victory.
“This was pretty ugly,” said Arcanum coach Rachel Fearon. “My girls
know that defense wins games. Tonight, defensively, we were not where
we needed to be and Ansonia wanted it. We beat Tri-Village and now the
targets on our backs and now, we’re the team to beat and everyone wants
us. You have to show up to play every night and we didn’t show up
tonight. We had no desire or no passion since we played Tri-Village.
We’ll get it back.”
“We played hard,” said Ansonia coach Jim Bolin after the Tigers loss.
“We never quit. We had a lethargic start and when you spot teams like
Arcanum the points like we did, it’s hard to come back. Our kids can
play with anybody when they come and bring their ‘A’ game. Tonight, we
did that. I told them coming down here that we were just as Good as
Arcanum and that we could play with anybody in our conference.”
Come back is exactly what the Tigers did as Ansonia took it to the home
team.
Trailing 17-9 at the end of the first quarter, the Tigers offense got
hot, closing to within a 25-23 count at half-time.
Even though Ansonia trailed after three, 36-31, holding ties at 25, 27
and 29, Ansonia got its first lead of the game, 31-30, on shot in the
paint by Fischer with 3:49 remaining in the frame.
“I’ve been coaching for 33 seasons and Catey Fischer is one of the best
players I’ve ever coached. She’s a good basketball player and human
being as well as a very mature young lady. I can’t say enough good
things about her.”
That would be the only lead the Tigers would see as Arcanum scored six
unanswered points in the final 1:21 of the frame.
While Bolin would never blame a mistake of the officials for losing a
game, there was an inadvertent whistle made as a ball was going out of
bounds.
The ball never made it out of bounds but the whistle was blown,
resulting in a jump ball after a lengthy discussion by the referees.
“It seems like they were not getting together on their calls and one
was over ruling another. A little thing like that really upset our
rhythm,” said Bolin. “Those things happen and you just have to deal
with them.”
Arcanum put three in double figures with Alexis Abner leading the way
with 17 points. Abby Ross chipped in with 13 while freshman Stevie
Johntin added 13 in support.
Ansonia, 5-8 (2-4) will host National Trail Saturday, while Arcanum,
13-4 (9-1) will visit Lehman Catholic Saturday.
