Jets flame out as Trojans march
By George Starks
ARCANUM- The Arcanum Lady Trojans made it a clean sweep over Franklin
Monroe Thursday.
After a 64-24 victory over the Jets in the Burkett in November, many
thought Franklin Monroe would narrow the 40 point gap the Trojans
posted in the annual Tri-Village tournament.
That wasn’t the case as the now 6-3 (4-1) Trojans rolled to a
convincing 72-18 Cross County Conference victory over their backyard
rivals.
Led by senior Abby O’Donnell with 24 points, Arcanum put four players
in double figures. Sophomore Abby Ross chipped in with 14, Alexis Abner
added 13 and freshman Stevie Johnting netted 10 off the bench.
Of the 72 points scored, the Trojans scored 26 of those points in
transition due to the defense creating 33 Franklin Monroe turnovers.
“We work a lot of transition in practice,” said head coach Rachel
Ferron. “We work transition as much as we work our offense. Some games
that’s going to hurt you but that’s our game and that’s the way we
play. Our girls are physically capable of playing a fast paced game and
that’s what we’re going to do.”
With a 40 point win at the Burkett and a 54 point margin of victory
Thursday, Ferron is pleased with the improvement in her team despite
the huge layoff over Christmas and New Years.
“I’m happy with the improvement since the start of the season,” Ferron
stated. “I tell my kids to never be satisfied and to keep improving
because in the post season, we are going to play some teams we’re going
to have to compete against. We played hard tonight and we never let up
on defense. Defense creates offense for us and tonight was a good
example of that.”
While Arcanum took the easy CCC victory in convincing fashion, leading
at all the stops, 20-6, 42-9 and 58-14, the highlight of the night may
very well have been the return of senior Josie Weaver.
Weaver has been out since the start of the season with a shoulder
injury, returning to the lineup for Ferron.
“That was huge for us tonight,” said Ferron. “Josie was so excited to
be back in the game. It has just been eating her alive since the
beginning of the season not being able to play. She was released by the
doctor on Monday and we never practiced until Wednesday. So her first
day of contact was Wednesday.”
Arcanum will host Dixie Saturday while the Jets will entertain Bradford
on Saturday in a conference game.

The
introduction of The Nothing But Net trophy was introduced Thursday
as the two teams will play for the hardware
in the future. The trophy
will be a traveling trophy as the winner will be able to hold on to it
from year to year.
Arcanum will have possession until the two teams
meet next season at The Hangar.
