Ansonia taking
small steps in passing scrimmage

ARCANUM- Long time Ansonia football coach Eugene Hoening could be heard
loud and clear when he belted out to his backup quarterback: ‘Short
passes good. Long passes bad.’
It’s no secret that the passing aspect of football has not been a
huge weapon over the years.
When the 2014 season begins, Hoening will once again look to the run in
his smash mouth offense style of football.
“I heard an announcer once say; the longer the pass, the less likely it
will be completed, so let’s go for the sure thing” said Hoening in the
quote of the announcer. “It’s like trying to hit a single in football
versus a homerun. Neither is easy but it’s easier to get that single.
Going with the short pass is easier to complete than the long one.”
While the Ansonia offense will consist mostly of the run, Hoening
talked of his passing game Thursday.
“We ran our basic play action pass plays the whole time so we repped
those to death,” Hoening admitted. “We are getting comfortable with
what we do when it comes to game time as opposed to putting in some
kind of seven on seven offense.”
With the 2014 season right around the corner, Hoening spoke of his
group as a team.
“This group is very coachable,” said Hoening. “They hustle on every
play and they go all out. That’s all you can ask for.”
While Hoening was only able to see his passing game in the Tigers lone
seven on seven of the year, he pointed out the positives and what he
thought needed improvements.
“I really liked the way our half-backs were able to get out into the
flat quickly and our quarterback delivering it in a timely way,” said
Hoening. “I thought our defense played great. We have played no defense
at all so far. We took 20 minutes of one practice to line people up so
this is the first defense we’ve done.”
“I think we could improve on sharpening our routes and making our cuts
a little sharper,” Hoening continued. “I would like to see the
quarterbacks get the ball away a little quicker on the waggle. The ends
coming open in that void and the quarterback should be throwing it now
instead of waiting a few more steps. By then, the end has already ran
into the next cover.”
Ansonia will open the 2014 season on Thursday, August 28 at Belmont.
