Trojans look good in scrimmage
By George Starks
NEW BREMEN- The Arcanum Trojans hit the road Tuesday
for the first time during the 2014 high school football season.
The destination was New Bremen and a 7-on-7 passing scrimmage with the
host Cardinals.
It was a good way for Arcanum coach TJ Powers to get a good look at
some of his offense and defense.
“We had our first camp last night (Monday) and we got one hour of
practice in before the rains came so we got a lot of board work in
(chalk talk) ,” said Powers. “I was pretty pleased with the way our
kids played today. They responded to adversity and they made the plays.
I was really proud of the younger guys because they were a little rough
the first couple of series because we just haven’t practiced that much
and they picked it up. Overall, I was really pleased with the effort
and how our guys got after it tonight. We were being physical on both
sides of the ball which is exactly what we want.”
In football, everything starts with the center and the quarterback.
Junior Daniel O’Donnell will lead the Trojan attack come opening night
at home with Northridge on August 29th with Pierce Lindamuth as his
back-up.
“I though both Dan and Pierce done an outstanding job tonight,” said
Powers. “Our centers looked good as well. We take pride in these two
positions at these 7-on-7’s. Most teams don’t bring their center but I
think that’s important. You want them to get as many exchanges as they
can. So they worked on their snaps as far as their power steps bird dog
steps. I think we had only one interception and that’s one too many but
overall, I think both of my quarterbacks played well.”
While Powers was pleased with his signal callers, he was also pleased
with his receiving corps.
“We have some guys out there that go out and get after it,” said
Powers. “They go get the ball and can make some plays. We are more of a
running team and in a 7-on-7, we can’t run. We are going to throw more
than we have been doing in the past. We’re going to try to mix it up
more because we have some guys that can throw it and guys that can go
after it. We got open tonight and I thought we looked decent.”
While the passing and receiving received a good grade from the coach,
the defense wasn’t quite what Powers wanted to see.
“Overall, that was the one area where we had a lot of blown coverages,”
Powers stated. “I’m not making any excuses but we really haven’t had a
lot of practice. Every blown coverage we had was because the guy
thought he had something else. That didn’t upset me. What did upset me
was some of the things the older guys did.”
The Trojans will hold a 7-on-7 of their own a week from Thursday as
five other teams will invade Arcanum, including the Ansonia Tigers and
the Union City Indians.
Action starts at 10 am.
