Francis sets
Guinness record

Alan Francis of Defiance, OH won a Guinness Book of Records' 19th NHPA
Men's Class A World horseshoe pitching championship at Buffalo. NY this
past weekend..
Francis finished 15-0 in the round-robin championship tournament by
throwing 650 ringers on 754 shoes, a percentage of 86.21 percent. He
defeated runnerup Brian Simmons 40-17 and third-place finisher Mike
Creek 42-9 in the finals. Simmons won 13 of 15 matches, while Creek was
12-3. A former Troy resident, Jim Walters, a perennial challenger for
world honors and Ringer Classic titles, finished fourth with 10 wins,
including a conquesrt of Creek 41-36.
Joan Elmore repeated as the A women's champion, going 15-0 with a
ringer percentage of 83.08. Debra Brown was second, with her only loss
to Elmore, 42-20.
A total of 87 Ohioans competed in the two-week long tournament.that
attracted more than 1,200 pitchers Buckeyes winning Class championships
included Ruth Rife, senior women; Virgil Rife, Class A senior men and
Chuck Warner, Class L Senor Men;
