Local athletes
gearing up
Local writer gearing up as well
By George Starks
DARKE COUNTY- When the calendar page is turned to August; high school
athletes have long been ready to get things in gear.
Football players have been in camps and seven on seven passing
scrimmages. Now the dreaded two-a-days are about to get started.
Volleyball players are looking forward to getting on the court and
attacking the nets.
The same goes for boys and girls soccer players at Greenville and
Franklin Monroe.
Girls tennis and both boys and girls golf will be underway soon, not to
mention the cross country runners.
With the kids ready to kick start their season, many have seen me
recently, asking if I’m ready and what my limitations are.
Since the end of the winter sports season, I have spent countless hours
going to doctor’s appointments and physical therapy sessions.
Last year, I was able to cover many volleyball matches as well as
soccer and girls tennis.
If you noticed, I never mentioned football. I was very frustrated about
not getting to one football game a year ago. I am hoping this will
change this football season.
I have looked at the opening night schedule and I’m trying to figure
out the games that might be the most intriguing to cover.
Opening night will feature two games that are interesting.
Arcanum will be hosting Northridge. This is interesting only because
Trojans coach TJ Powers is looking to improve on record that left
Arcanum a few points short of making the playoffs. If the Trojans look
to be successful in 2014, it will start with a victory over the
visiting Vikings.
The other game that is of interest happens at Mississinawa Valley as
the Hawks will host Union City. The Hawks are low on numbers (26) while
the Indians (5-5) will have 40 or more in uniform. Mississinawa Valley,
under the direction of John Graher, will look to do some damage in the
Cross County Conference.
Union City will travel to Tri-High to battle the Titans in a key TEC
game on August 22.
Keith Malloy and company will look to hopefully go 2-0 with a win over
the Hawks while MV would love to get the season started with a win.
Other opening night games will see Versailles heading to Celina while
Greenville will travel to Eaton.
Bradford will host the Pirates of Riverside while Ansonia will play at
Belmont on Thiursday, August 28. That game will be played at Welcome
Stadium in Dayton. Starting at 7 pm.

As for this writer, I can only say, “I hope to see you at a game
somewhere.”
