Ahrens will
play for Izzo at Michigan State
VERSAILLES – It was never a secret as to where Versailles senior Kyle Ahrens would play college basketball.
The only question was when he would sign.
That question was put to rest Thursday night as Ahrens finally inked
his letter to go to Michigan State, trading the black and orange for
the green and white of the Spartans.
Ahrens, the son of Kevin and Susan Ahrens, had a signing ceremony
Thursday night at Versailles High School after officially signing his
letter of intent to play for the Michigan State men’s basketball team
on Wednesday.
As a sophomore, Ahrens led the Tigers to a state runner up title and a
year ago, Versailles was looking to make a strong run again before he
busted up his leg in a game at Versailles in the Holiday Tournament
there.
During his sophomore season, he averaged 19.1 points per game, 6.2 rebounds per game and 1.6 assists per game.
As a junior he was off to an even better start as he averaged 22.0
points per game, 6.5 rebounds per game and 3.0 assists per game before
breaking his leg.
Ahrens recently felt pain in his leg and was diagnosed with a stress
fracture, which has slowed down his preparations for the upcoming
season, forcing him to take some time away from basketball.
Ahrens profiles to either a shooting guard or small forward at the college level.
Ahrens is a three-star prospect, according to recruiting website
247sports.com and espn.com. He joins five-star power forward/center
Deyonta Davis of Muskegon, Michigan, and four-star shooting guard
Matthew McQuaid of Duncanville, Texas, in Michigan State’s 2015
recruiting class. Together, they are the 12th ranked class in the
nation, according to 247sports.com.
