Ansonia earns
big win over Mississinawa Valley
Hoening now with 199 career wins

ANSONIA- It was just a year ago that Mississinawa Valley finally did
the unthinkable.
The Blackhawks beat Ansonia for the first time in the history of
football at Mississinawa Valley.
Friday night, the winless Hawks looked to make it two in a row but that
never came close to happening.
On the strength of 149 yards rushing and two touchdowns by senior
Jordon Newman and two passing touchdowns by senior Nick Peters, the
Ansonia Tigers toppled Mississinawa Valley, 36-6, in Cross County
Conference play Friday.
“I think this is redemption for us,” said Ansonia coach Eugene Hoening.
“I think the boys figured out they could put four quarters of football
together.”
Despite trailing 21-0 at the half, the defense of the Hawks held
Ansonia down.
In the third quarter, the Hawks got on the board at the 10:50 mark on a
one yard run by junior Cameron Anguiano, making the score 21-6.
“I thought Mississinawa had good momentum in the third quarter,” said
Hoening.”I never came as a surprise that they scored on their opening
possession in the third quarter. Coach Graher (John) executes the
wing T offense as well as anyone. Sometimes when you come out to start
the third quarter and you’re not up to speed, the other team can take
advantage of that. I was kind of afraid when they got the ball, they
were going to execute their offense and they did.”
Not putting and long plays on the field, the Tigers were forced to
sustain long drives.
With the exception of a 59 yard scoring run by Newman at the 3:39 mark
of the first quarter, it was short runs and pass plays that held true
for Ansonia.
“In high school football, if you have to sustain any long drives, you
usually end up shooting yourself in the foot before you get to the end
zone,” said Hoening. “We did that a couple of times but we were able to
recover. Our passing game was somewhat effective tonight. You’ve got to
give both teams credit. Both teams played extremely hard.”
Hoening commented on his defense and the ability to hold the Hawaks
offense down.
“We pursued the ball well,” said Hoening. We rant through the tackles
and did a good job wrapping up. It was just basic, fundamental
football. A few times. Coach Macy (Matt) sent our linebackers on
some stunts. I don’t know if he was running a thunder Stunt or ran them
out on some crosses and a couple of times we got them for some losses.”
On the other side of the field, coach Graher had nothing but praise for
the Tigers game.
“I thought they (Ansonia) did a nice job of executing their offense and
their defense tonight,” Said Graher. “We tried to comeback after being
21 down at halftime and we had a sprk in the third quarter that I
thought was going to ignite us but it didn’t happen.”
The Hawks gave up to scores early with the first coming with 9:47 left
in the opening frame on a six yard run by Peters.
With the 59 yard bust by Newman late in the quarter, the Hawks defense
stepped up to the challenge to close out the half.” commented Graher.
“I thought we played pretty well but again, I give their team credit
for playing well.”
The Hawks caught a huge break in the third quarter.
With time winding down in the frame, Ansonia fumbled the ball and the
Hawks recovered at the Tigers 39.
On the first play from scrimmage, the Hawks returned the favor and the
Tigers were back in control of the ball at their own 43.
“That’s football,” said Graher. “We talk about ball security all the
time and that was the only fumble we lost possibly. I thought our ball
security for the game was pretty good but that was a huge loss for us.”
With the win, coach Hoening picked up win 199 in his illustrious career
at Ansonia and will try for number 200 next week at Bethel.
The Bees fell to National Trail, 35-21 at Trail.
Mississinawa Valley, 0-8, will host Arcanum.
The Trojans, 3-5, popped Middletown Christian Friday, 46-12.
