Jets soar over
hapless Cardinals
Triad no match for FM
By George Starks
PITSBURG- Marcus Horner, Jacob Shellabarger and Colby Chrisman scored
two goals each with Gustavo Ferreira adding another for good measure
Thursday, as the Franklin Monroe Jets sent Triad back to North
Lewisburg with a 7-0 sectional loss.
The game winner came off the foot of Shellabarger, a sophomore, with
32:14 left in the opening half.
Less than five minutes later, it was the senior, Marcus Horner that got
into the act.
At that point, the party was on and Shellabarger and Horner scored
again with Chrisman giving the Jets a 5-0 advantage with 9:31 left in
the half.
Just 58 second into the second half, Chrisman tallied another goal with
the junior, Ferreira giving the Jets the final score of the evening
with 6:40 remaining in the game.
With the Jets showing their superiority on the field, it gave FM coach
Danny Diceanu a chance to get everyone in.
“Everybody got to play in the first half,” said Diceanu. “My starters
only got to play about 20 minutes the first half and I started to
rotate people in. At this stage of the season, you want to keep the
legs fresh and in a game like this, it affords you the opportunity to
do that.”
With the score being lopsided in favor of Franklin Monroe, Triad came
out swinging and Diceanu gave the Cardinals credit for their
performance on the field.
“They came ready to play,” said Diceanu. “Their record is worse than
they are I think. It’s probably just some unfortunate losses. I knew
they had a couple of good players and we had to watch them and know
where they were on the field. This team worked hard for 80 minutes and
it didn’t matter what the score was. We were patient. We shared the
ball and we communicated. We made some mistakes defensively but
overall, we played well.”
With the game in the books and safely tucked away, Diceanu looked to
Monday and a date with a team he played at the beginning of the
year…Yellow Springs.
The Bulldogs popped Dixie 11-0 in their sectional game with Dixie.
“This will be a rematch of our opening game at Crew Stadium (Columbus)
which we tied 1-1,” said Diceanu. “This will be a good game. They (YS)
have a lot of good players that we need to be aware of where they are.
They’re record (6-3-5) does not indicate how good of a team they are.
We drew them 1-1 in a game that could have went either way. We tied
them in the last minute and a half on a free kick but we also missed
some opportunities early on. This is going to be a tough physical match
and a one or two goal game.”
The two teams will meet for the second time next Monday at Franklin in
a scheduled 7 pm start.
