My
grandson, Greenville senior Dylan Knoop, walks off the field
recently after a 1-0 loss to Trotwood. It was the
last time I will get
to see him play and I took it like a real Papaw. It wasn't easy. CNO

I never
realized until...

GREENVILLE - The date was Tuesday, September 30th and my plan that day
was to go to Mississinawa Valley for volleyball.
As I thought about things that day, it struck me the fall sports was
winding down and many sports were coming to an end. The biggest of
which was soccer and my grandson, Dylan Knoop, a senior at Greenville.
I looked at the Wave schedule and realized it was the next to last home
game for Greenville.
As I left for the game, tears filled my eyes and I knew it was not
going to be an easy night.
Not for this Papaw!
I got to the stadium and the first person to see me was my
granddaughter, Tori.
She asked why I was crying and I told her.
She laughed.
Then comes my daughter, Merrhya, and she asked the same question.
Again, I told her and she to laughed.
They didn't understand. This was my senior night and it was having a
real affect on me and my emotions.
After 28 years of writing sports, I never realized what the big deal
was as my daughter never played sports and was never a part of a senior
night.
The Wave hosted Trotwood-Madison and I knew if I was ever going to see
him play again, it had to be on this night. I knew I would not be there
on his senior day as that will be on a Saturday and I will be working.
All I wanted to see was for the team to get a win and for Dylan to
score a goal.
Neither happened as the team lost to the Rams, 1-0.
I can honestly say, I totally understand why parents get emotional on
senior night, even though I have no children in school anymore.
From that night forward, I will always know what parents go through on
senior night.
Even now, after nearly a week, my eyes are filled with tears.
I love my grandchildren very much and I cannot imagine what graduation
will be like in the spring for me.
Next year when Tori has her senior night, as she is in the Wavettes, I
can say it will be much of the same for me.
Can someone please bring me some Kleenex?
