Lady Jets
grounded by Newton

PITSBURG- For the opening 10 minutes of play Thursday, the Franklin
Monroe Lady Jets were playing true Jet soccer.
The rest of the 70 minutes belonged to Newton.
In a game that usually has conference implications and more often than
not is played close to the vest, it was home standing Franklin Monroe
that seemed to forget who their opponents were.
In a game that all but eliminated Franklin Monroe from the conference
chase, it was Newton that posted a very decisive, 4-0 victory in a
Cross County Conference showdown.
Now 1-2 on the season, the Jets are looking for that one true leader on
the field.
“I don’t want to say we’re struggling,” said Jets coach Scott Howell.
“I think we’re just trying to figure out who we are. We need to find
out who we are amongst ourselves and we’ve got to learn to play
together and make it fun. We are struggling a little bit in the locker
room but that happens with every team. It’s early in the season and we
will find out 2014 Lady Jets. We may not be the best team in the area
but I think they’re going to hold their own, figure out who they are
and we’ll be fine.”
Newton got the game winner with 28:22 left in the first half on a solid
shot off the right foot of senior Trelissa Lavy.
That would be the score at the break but it didn’t take long for the
Tribe to put a dart in the balloon of the Jets.
With scores at the 35:49 and 31:16 marks, Newton took all the steam out
of the FM engines.
“Our balloon got a hole in it and the air ran wild I guess you can
say,” admitted Howell. “We talked at halftime about playing our game
and not worrying about the score. We tend to try to improve on every
play and not on every half or in every game. We want to get better on
every play. That’s fundamental soccer and that’s what we’re trying to
teach here. Hats off to Newton, they came to play and were very hungry.
They’ve played some very tough teams and have been in all its games
Newton is playing well and they have a lot of kids over there that want
it and that may be the difference right now.”
The Jets will battle Sidney Lehman on Saturday, with Miami East looming
in the shadows next Thursday.
“We have a stretch of some pretty tough teams coming up,” Howell said
in conclusion.
