GREENVILLE- Some might say that holding the Vandalia-Butler soccer team
to under 10 goals might be considered a moral victory.
There is no such thing.
Butler went to 11-0 on the soccer season Tuesday with a 9-0 victory
over Greenville in a GWOC North battle Tuesday at Harmon Field.
The Aviators scored the first goal with 28:57 remaining in the opening
half.
Just 24 seconds later, the visitors scored again and tacked on a third
goal at the 16:05 mark for a 3-0 lead at the break.
“We played hard and stayed positive,” said Wave coach Brent DeVoss.
“Our youth came out in the second half. We got a little tired and it
became a numbers game in the second half. I saw it in their eyes at
half-time. They had given me everything they had. They put it all on
the line. Butler came in at 10-0 and they’re playing well. They are on
a roll and we want them to continue on and we want them to represent
the GWOC North for us (tournament) and represent the GWOC overall.”
Down by only three, the Wave and DeVoss felt they were in the contest
byr hanging in with the Aviators at the break.
“We had a game plan tonight and we stuck to it and we showed a lot of
positives tonight,” said DeVoss. “We had a good week of practice and we
could have played with almost anyone tonight. We’ve bee really working
hard this week. We came in off that big win over National Trail (12-0
win and senior Dylan Knoop scored a hat trick) and that gave us some
positive energy and we carried that over into tonight.”
When the second half started, it too less than two minutes for Butler
to strike again and before the final buzzer had sounded; the Aviators
had put six more goals on the board for the 9-0 victory.
“We were playing a lot of defense in this game and you get tired,”
DeVoss pointed out. “We have to stay positive and keep working on the
right things.”
Now 2-8 on the season, the Wave will travel to Piqua next Tuesday for a
date with the Indians.
