Versailles remains undefeated in MAC play
Tigers clip Cardinals wings

VERSAILLES- Coming in riding a 17 game losing streak, the New Bremen Cardinals wanted nothing more than to break that streak by sending Versailles Tigers to their first defeat of the season the Midwest Athletic Conference.

For the Tigers, it was obvious. Give the Cardinals their 18th straight regular season loss and remain undefeated in conference play.

Junior quarterback Jerrod Niekamp threw for three first half scores Friday as Versailles romped over New Bremen, 41-14.

In addition, the Tigers had three rushing touchdowns, the first by Colin Peters on a 31 yard run, one by Adam Lyons on a one yard score and one by Jace Barga, a 32 yard scamper.

Miller had very little to say after the game stating, “I thought we played well. The kids played hard”.

New Breman took the opening kickoff off the foot of Zach Stienbrenner.

After that it was pretty much all downhill for the Red Birds.

After a three yard run on the first play from scrimmage by senior quarterback Trey Naylor,  the Cards were looking at a second and seven from their own 23.

On the ensuing play, Naylor dropped to pass and found Steinbrenner.

The Versailles defender gave the ball to the Tiger at the New Bremen 46.

Starting at the QB position in place of Niekamp was Lyons.

Lyons would return the favor on the interception by Naylor but the drive would stall for New Bremen.

Starting at the New Bremen 48, Niekamp would take his rightful place under center and the Tigers would find the end zone on a 31 yard run by Peters.

Before the Cardinals could think about things, the opening frame was over and the second 12 minutes was underway.

With 11:03 left in the half, Niekamp had hooked up with Steinbrenner on a five yard toss and Versailles went up 13-0.

Versailles struck again at the 7:56 mark on a 32 yard pass to Corey Derringer.

Versailles would put another score on the board at the 5:07 mark as Niekamp and Derringer would hookup again for a 27-0 lead and the rout was on.

Versailles would score again on a one yard run by Lyons for a 34-0 lead with 2:30 left in the half but the Cardinals would not roll over.

Staring at its own 18, New Bremen would go 82 yards and get on the board with 10 seconds remaining as Naylor would complete a three yard pass to senior Tristen Hoffmaster but the Tigers would hold a comfortable 34-7 lead at the break.

Miller would start using his reserves the rest of the way as the Tigers would cruise to the 41-14 victory.

Versailles, 3-1, 2-0, will travel to Minster and a date with the Wildcat this Friday.
