Versailles remains undefeated in MAC play
Lady Tigers run
over Coldwater
By George Starks
VERSAILLES- Coming in with a not so impressive 4-4 mark, the Versailles
Lady Tigers were able to remain undefeated in MAC play Thursday.
On the strength of a four run first and second, Versailles went to 2-0
in the conference posting a convincing 11-2 win over Coldwater.
Down 1-0 after the first half inning, the Tigers went to work in the
bottom of the frame.
With the bases juiced, Ashley Voisard dropped a single into right,
scoring the tying.
After that, the offense was all Versailles.
Danielle Morris followed with a double, scoring two.
Lauren Heitkamp followed with a walk and then it was Sarah Gigagnet’s
turn as she ripped a single to left giving Versailles a 4-1 lead,
sending nine to the plate in the frame.
The Tigers followed that up with four more in the second, with the aid
of three Cavalier errors.
Overall, Versailles coach Michelle Heitkamp was pleased.
“The kids did a really nice job tonight,” said Heitkamp. “This was
probably the best overall game of the season that we’ve on both offense
and defense. We had some timely hitting which is a change fore us.
Usually, we have the bases loaded and left them stranded. I see us
getting better though.”
Versailles tacked on two more in the third and another in the fourth as
Coldwater squeezed in a run in the third.
With all the scoring in the books, the Tigers defense did the talking
the rest of the way.
“The fact that we went from an offense attack to our defense was a
surprise,” said Heitkamp. “I thought we were hitting the ball well
early then we were hitting the ball to them. The last couple of games,
we’ve had to play solid defense. Our last game, we beat Ft. Loramie 1-0
so our defense had to play well.”
On offense, the Tigers pounded out 11 hits while committing two errors
on the night.
In the circle, Wenning was masterful.
The Tiger pitcher allowed five hits while fanning six and walking only
one.
“Racheal did a great job tonight,” said Heitkamp. “She did well hitting
her spots and her off speed pitches when we needed it. We’re very proud
of her. With us calling the pitches, she was able to keep them off
balance and was able to adjust of those batters that we needed to be
kept under control.”
After a year of figuring out who would fill in with many lost seniors,
Heitkamp is getting the ball rolling in the right direction.
“I’m still trying to figure out some of our infielders yet,” said
Heitkamp. “So far we are still undefeated in the conference. With only
having one scrimmage in, we are still trying to find out identity and
that was due to the basketball team going so far in the tournament
(State Champions).”
Sporting a 5-4 mark after Thursday, the Tigers traveled to Miami East
Friday and will play two today at Bradford with Russia and the
Railraoders.
