Cardinals fly
high in win over Versailles
By George Starks
VERSAILLES - It wasn’t exactly Versailles Lady Tiger basketball.
In fact, it was far from it.
When New Bremen rolled into Versailles High School Thursday, the
Cardinals brought some lumber that the Lady Tigers weren’t used to
seeing.
They brought a truckload and used every piece.
What started out to be a tight game, turned in to anything but
tight.
With Versailles holding a slim 18-17 lead at the end of the first
quarter, that’s when the Cardinals broke out the lumber and it came in
the form of defense.
A stiff New Bremen press and 2-3 zone held Versailles to only four
second quarter points.
Even with the lack of offense, the Tigers trailed by a 24-22 count.
By the time the Tigers decided to play basketball, it was much too
late, falling by a 46-35 score in Midwest Athletic Conference play.
New Bremen started the second half on a 7-0 run, building a nice 31-22
advantage by the 4:45 mark.
Versailles, struggling to find the bottom of the net, was held
scoreless in the frame until the 2:36 mark when junior Kami Ording
dropped a trey and the Tigers looked as if they were starting to show a
sign of life.
Showing life and keeping it are two different matters as the Tigers
would see only two more points in the third, trailing 39-27 with eight
minutes left on the clock.
By the time Versailles decided to get in the game, the game had all but
been decided.
With the Cardinals controlling the ball and killing the clock,
Versailles trailed 46-29 with1:38 left in the game.
“We showed no sense of urgency until the last minute of the game,” said
Versailles coach Jackie Stonebreaker. “At that point, we felt like
world beaters but you’ve got to play 32 minutes and that didn’t get
done tonight.”
Over the course of time, the Versailles success has always hinged on
defense.
Thursday, defense was not on the minds of the Tigers.
“Defense is where it all starts for us,” said Stonebreaker. “Or defense
just did not rotate at all. We scored 18 points and that’s great but
they scored 17 and it was still a ball game. I just feel like we never
got them on defense and that’s where our game starts. We gave them too
much cushion. We let them control the ball too much and we could never
rebound. This is a very young and inexperienced team oiut there but
they need to grow up and start talking to each other out there.”
Now 3-3, the Tigers will play Miami Valley today.
