Lady Patriots
ground Jets in tournament action
Young FM team eliminated
By George Starks
BREOOKVILLE- If there is one thing nearly every coach will say it next
to impossible to beat the same team twice in the same year.
Thursday, Tri-Village hooked up with Franklin Monroe for the third time
this season.
For the third time, the outcome was the same, a Lady Patriots victory.
The two teams met in November in the opening night of the Burkett
Tournament and the Patriots rolled to a 68-22 victory.
It was just a week ago, they hooked up again and it was Tri-Village
taking an 80-34 decision.
Thursday in the opening round of the sectional tournament, the Pats
once again prevailed, 62-27.
Tri-Village jumped out to the early 12-0 lead and held a 26-6 advantage
after one quarter of play.
By the end of the half, the Patriots were marching with a 37-14 edge.
With the Pats putting three in double figures on the night, it was the
hot shooting of Rachel Miller that set the tone.
Miller had 12 first half points, all from outside the three point line.
“It was nice to see her come out and hit some shots,” said T-V coach
Brad Gray. “Percentage wise, she’s our best three point shooter this
year. We’ve been trying to get her to be a little more willing to take
those shots. She came out and she was a willing shooter and it paid off
for her. She’s still not taking as many shots as we would like for her
to take but she does a good job distributing the ball to other players.”
Despite winning by 35 points, Gray know there is always room for
improvement.
“This is tournament basketball and winning is what it’s all about,”
said Gray. “By no means am I satisfied with the way we played. We could
have played better.”
When the final buzzer had sounded, senior Echo Brown led the Patriots
charge with 23 points while Shelby Dowler dumped in 14 in support of
Brown
The Jets finish the season with a dismal 2-21 mark but by no
means are to be overlooked in the future.
Jets head coach Dave Horner has a lot to look forward to.
Horner will lose only one senior off this year’s team in Emma Baker.
Baker netted 11 in her final game in a Jets uniform.
Horner praised his team after the game saying he was proud of them for
never giving up and never hanging their heads.
He held Baker in high regards.
“I’ve only been here two years coaching,” said Horner.” She got better
from last year to now. She was in double figures I would say half of
the games this year. She got to the rim, she understands what I wanted
her to do and she’s very coachable. I’m proud of how she handled
herself.”
Tri-Village, the number one seed in the Brookville sectional, will play
Jefferson Tuesday starting at 6 pm.
