Lady Tigers
cruise in sectional opener
Northeastern next up for Versailles
By George Starks
TIPP CITY- The Versailles Lady Tigers got off to a bit of a rocky start
against Northridge in the sectional opener at Tipp City Wednesday.
In fact, the Lady Polar Bears held two leads early with the last being
a 5-4 advantage.
After that, Versailles kicked things into overdrive and cruised to a
powerful 84-17 victory.
“We were able to figure out who was shooting well,” said Versailles
coach Jackie Stonebreaker. “Their number 55 (Lindsey Smith) hit a
couple of shots from the outside so we had to close in on her. We put
more of a guard on her than a post and that allowed us to rebound the
basketball easier.”
It was a night when the Tigers controlled every aspect of the game.
Versailles had very few turnovers and never picked up its first foul of
the night until the third wiarter.
With the exception of the final score that saw Christa Putoff net 22 to
lead all scorers with senior Lauren Bruns and junior Lauren Monnin
adding 12 each, the Tigers controlled the boards.
Snatching down 45 rebounds with 46 second chance points to only 14
board for the Polar Bears.
“I was kidding with Lauren Monnin because she had eight offensive
rebounds,” said Stonrbreaker. “I told her she missed half of the shots
she took and was able to get her own rebound. The girls laughed that
off because that’s the way we play. We go after our own missed shots.”
Down 5-4 early, the Tigers went on a 22-3 run and at the end of the
opening frame, Versailles held a 26-8 advantage.
Versailles picked up right where it left off in the second quarter.
The spinach can had been left open and the Tigers dined on it.
Versailles went on a 22-0 run before Northridge collected a trey at the
buzzer.
By then, it was all over but the shouting as the Tigers were in
control, 48-11.
Versailles will now look toward Monday and a second round game with
Northeastern starting at 7:30.
Tuesday, Arcanum will play at Tipp on Tuesday against the winner of the
Anna/Milton Union game starting a 6 pm.
