When it comes to success in sports at Versailles, defense is the name

Miami East next on the Tigers prowl

TIPP CITY- Pat Wampler Gym is becoming a second home to the Versailles
Lady Tigers.
Monday, in second round action of the OHSAA basketball sectional,
Versailles had a growl that left the Northeastern Jets sitting on the
tarmac with their engines locked up.
When the final horn had sounded, Versailles had rolled to a 72-29
victory over the Jets.
With only seven seconds having expired off the first quarter clock,
Versailles had already made it known that it was a night that would
belong to the Tigers and with eight minutes in the books, Versailles
held a commanding 24-11 lead.
“It was a good first quarter for us,” Versailles coach Jacki
Stonebraker said. “I felt we got out and ran against them like we
wanted to do. In the pre-game talk we talked about getting out and
running and making their transition work, and you could tell they got a
little bit tired throughout the game.”
It’s no secret in Versailles that defense wins championships and the
top seeded Tigers had their defense going on.
Versailles allowed only five second quarter points, 10 in the third and
just fourth in the fourth as the Tigers were able to contain the
Northeastern shooters.
Versailles held freshman Halley Suchland to 12 points and junior
Kaitlyn Moore to just nine in the game as the two accounted for 21 of
the Jets 29 points.
“I thought we did a pretty good job containing most of them,” said
Stonebreaker “A couple of them got their averages, but for the most
part we contained their shooters.”
On offense, the Tigers put four in double figures as senior Christa
Putoff led the way with 22 points and had 12 rebounds, Of the dozen
boards, Putoff had seven off the offensive glass with four being put
back in for points.
“She did a nice job scoring the basketball,” Stonebraker said. “She’s
turning and squaring and looking straight up to the basket, so that’s
what we want to see out of her.”
Along with Putoff, Versailles got 14 from junior Lauren Monnin with 13
from Lauren Bruns and 10 from Camille Watern off the bench.
Now 19-4 on the season, Versailles will once again hook up with Miami
East for yet another sectional title.
The Vikings held off a stubborn bunch from Dixie in the opening game of
the night, 47-42.
The Vikings and Tigers will meet for the sectional championship at 6
p.m. Thursday at Tipp City High School.
“Miami East it sound kind of like a broken record,” said Stonebraker.
“I feel like we play them every year.”
The meeting will be the second of the year for the two schools. They
played each other on February 7 and the Tigers prevailed 82-45 on that
Saturday.
“Miami East has played well since that game,” Stonebraker said. “We
will have to out-rebound the Vikings and contain their outside
shooters. I think they’re playing a lot more zone, a lot more 1-2-2,
and they’re trapping a lot more,. They are lot more active on defense
and they’re really playing with a spark on defense. They are moving
well without the basketball on the offensive side.”
