It was long overdue
By George Starks
NEW MADISON- Like everyone else in attendance, I waited patiently for
the big announcement.
I have to admit, I had a real good idea what was coming and my
anticipation was growing by the second.
When Tri-Village superintendent Josh Sagester made the announcement
that football was coming to Patriot Nation, fans in attendance erupted
in a loud cheer and a standing ovation was well underway.
While the multitudes cheered and clapped, all I could do was sit in my
chair and let it sink in.
It was an announcement that was well received but was 43 years too late
in my opinion.
As a 1976 graduate of Tri-Village and a member of the first four-year
class of the school, it was something we always wanted but the school
board at that time, would never allow it.
As students, we were given some sad excuse as to why we couldn't have
football.
As I sat there, my emotions were bouncing of the wall and no one there
could possibly feel what I was feeling.
After the ceremony was complete, I wheeled myself onto the floor and
Sagester was the first one to greet me.
"Did you ever think you would live to see this day," he asked.
At that point, my emotions took over.
I got a little choked up and said, "No, I never thought this would ever
happen."
For me, as a member of the media and an alumnus of Tri-Village, it was
very hard for me to remain neutral in this matter.
Usually, I can control myself and not stand when the school fight song
is being played at games.
Needless to say, I only do this when another county team is there even
though I can no longer stand for and length of time.
Since the announcement, I have thought many times what it will be like
when not only the first junior high game is played but what it will be
like when the varsity takes the field in 2017.
I am waiting for the day the very first head coach is named.
That will be interesting.
I hope I'm still around when the design of the new stadium is revealed.
I want to be there and have the ability to soak it all in.
I wonder what the name of the stadium will be.
I have a suggestion and the name of Matt Renfro comes to mind as well
as a guy named Don Brawley.
Oh what a day that will be.
I just hope I can hold the tears back.
