Taking the good
with the bad
By George Starks
Once again, Tri-Village struck gold and this time it was on a higher
level than the state basketball tournament.
Tri-Village graduate and now a sophomore at Akron University, Clayton
Murphy, won gold in the Pan Am games Thursday with a time of 1:47.19 to
win the gold medal on Thursday in Toronto. Murphy beat Columbia’s
Rafith Rodriguez by four-tenths of a second while American Ryan Martin
(his roomie) won the bronze to help the United States continue its
dominance at the games.
For anyone that saw the video of Murphy’s victory, the mere fact that
he ousted the Columbian, Rodriguez, by catching him at the line was
impressive in its own right.
If you didn’t see the video, it’s posted on my Facebook page.
I think what makes his victory even better is the fact he’s a Darke
County athlete and that by itself should make us all proud.
When the older generation was in high school, no one would ever venture
into our little ole county.
Now Darke County, with its best shining bright (Versailles, Greenville
and now Tri-Village) is a glowing beacon and a real hotbed for athletes.
If this isn’t enough to make you want to stand up and crow a little, I
have no clue as to what it would take.
Once again it made me proud to see someone from my alma mater stand
tall on the biggest stage of them all. A stage the whole world was
watching.
Clayton Murphy…From one Patriot to another, I salute you.
Well done kiddo.
Now you have the chance to make the Olympic team.
Good luck.
Now for the bad.
Friday, as I’m watching the local news, it was reported that the one
and only, Hulk Hogan, was released from his contract by the WWE.
Apparently, Hogan had used the ‘N’ word in an interview and it got back
to the powers that are in the WWE.
Granted, we all know that professional wrestling isn’t what it appears
to be.
Then again, it really is as phony as the world we live in and the
people that run it.
I don’t condone what Hogan said but I do understand part of his
reasoning when he said, “what makes the difference, they do it to me.”
He’s right!
If I use the ‘N’ word, the world will string me up but if I’m called a
‘Cracker’ then it’s okay and I’m supposed to keep my mouth shut and
just deal with it.
Whatever happened to the old saying “What’s good for one is good for
all”?
At one time, Hogan was bigger than life itself to a lot of little kids.
He was all the good the WORLD had to offer.
“Say your prayers and eat your vitamins.”
That was his creed in life.
So now Terry…
Whatcha gonna do now that the WWE has run wild on you?
So much for The Freedom of Speech.
Dude, you will always be the Hulkster but maybe you need to get back on
the vitamins and start saying your prayers.
