Patriots soar
over Jefferson to advance
Cook gets 1,000th career point
By George Starks
TROY- It’s not every day a player can achieve 1,000 points in his or
her high school career.
Tuesday, heading into his sectional semi-final game with Jefferson,
Tri-Village senior Damien Cook, the son of 1992 graduate, Scoob Cook,
was only eight points shy of that coveted milestone.
Cook hit that plateau Tuesday with 11.2 seconds remaining in the first
quarter on a tip in shot off a rebound.
At that point, the only thing left to be decided was the final score.
Tri-Village moved on to the sectional final with a massive 77-25
victory over the hapless Broncos as Cook dumped in 15 points and pulled
down 11 rebounds.
“It was a very special night for Damien,” said Patriots coach Josh
Sagester. “He got his thousandth point and a couple of dunks to go with
it. He’s a very special player and a big part of our success over the
past couple of years. I’m very happy for him and he’s very deserving.”
With the milestone being reached, the tip in gave the Pats a 19-1 lead
after the opening frame as the only point by Jefferson was scored on a
foul shot at the 1:43 mark.
The Pats came out not exactly playing like the number one D-IV team in
the state despite the 18 point first quarter lead.
“I thought we came out a little lethargic,” said Sagester of his team.
“I thought our energy level wasn’t at its peak but I think we got it
going a little bit and got some energy off the bench and started to
make a few perimeter shots and I thought we started to click from
there.”
With the game never in question, the Pats held leads of 39-6 at the
break and 65-16 after three quarters of play.
With things well in hand, Sagester started the final frame with all his
junior varsity players.
Senior Colton Linkous led all in scoring with 16 points while Gavin
Richards and Brett Boyter added 12 each in support of Linkous and Cook.
The Patriots will play for the right to go to district action Friday
against the winner v=between Newton and Cedarville.
