Greenville
homecoming ends in a losing effort
Piqua too hot to handle for Wave
By George Starks
GREENVILLE- The 2015 Greenville homecoming game will be well remembered
by many and would like to be forgotten by many more.
Piqua will remember it as the night it ruined the Greenville homecoming.
The only thing Wave fans will remember is a 48-14 loss.
Piqua’s Darien Tipps-Clemons sliced through the Wave defense at times
like a hot knife through butter.
The Indians running back scored three touchdowns while racking up
nearly 200 yards in offense against a weak Wave defense.
By the end of the opening stanza, the Indians held a 14-0 lead as
Tipps-Clemons hads scored the opening touchdown with Elijah Hudson
getting the second.
Greenville did close the gap to a 14-7 score early in the second when
quarterback Clay Guillozet would hit Justin Brown for an 8-yard
touchdown pass.
That would be the only time the Wave would see the endzone until late
in the game when Codi Byrd would take it in from three yards out with
just over four minutes remaining in the game.
Greenville, trailing 28-7 at the break, had a huge chance to score
early in the third quarter.
With starting quarterback Clay Guillozet, on the shelf with an injury
to start the second half, it was backup signal caller, Kyle Phillips
that took control of the team.
Phillips would put together the best drive of the night, taking
the Wave offense to the Piqua 23 yard line. That’s when it fell apart
for the team as a bad snap would create a fumble that would lead to the
Indians taking control.
When asked if that turnover took the wind out of the Wave sails,
Greenville coach Aaron Shaffer responded by simply saying, “It did, a
little.”
That turnover led to another Piqua score, giving the Indians a
commanding 35-7 advantage.
Later in the quarter, it was Allen Schrubb that punched the ball in
from six yards out and the clock would go into continuous motion as
Greenville trailed 42-7 with 4:51 left in the frame.
Byrd would take the ball in for the Wave with 4:15 left in the game but
it was too little too late for Greenville at that point.
Declining to respond when asked about the disappointment in
losing big on homecoming night, Shaffer did say, “these kids are
resilient,” trying to remain positive about his kids.
The Greenville Green Wave (3-4, 1-1 GWOC) will travel to
Vandalia-Butler to take on the Aviators (5-2, 2-0) at 7 p.m. Friday.
