Patriots make
three straight with win over Covington
By George Starks
NEW MADISON- Tri-Village junior quarterback Johnny Wilson ran wild
against Covington Saturday as the Patriots rolled to a convincing 49-12
win over the Buccs.
It was believed by many that Covington would be a stiff test for
Tri-Village but the upstart Patriots were ready to do what was needed
against their Cross County Conference (CCC) rivals.
Year in and year out, Covington has been at the top of the conference
at the varsity level winning 11 conference titles in the past 14 years.
“Anytime you go against Covington, you want to see if you can handle
their overall toughness,” Tri-Village coach Jason Schondelmyer said.
“They are a program that has been dominant in the CCC for years. Going
into the game, I knew it was going to be a good gauge for us physically
to see what would happen when we get hit in the mouth, because I know
their kids won’t quit and will play hard for four quarters. Obviously
our kids responded well and matched Covington’s physical toughness on
both sides of the balls and did that for four quarters. Covington’s
line is what makes them go, and we wanted to see how we matched up
against them. They come off the ball well all the time, and it was good
for our kids to match that and come out of it with an impressive
victory.”
Tri-Village took advantage of the Buccs miscues as Covington fumbled
its initial possession.
At that point, the Patriots were in control as Jared Buckley took the
ball in from 14 yards out.
Tri-Village tacked on two and the Pats were up-8-0.
By the end of the first half, the Patriots were well on their way, up
30-6.
For Schondelmyer, it’s all about the fundamentals and teaching kids how
to play the game correctly.
“The kids understand their roles more as we go and attacking now
instead of sitting back,” Schondelmyer said. “We talked about it.
Do you want to be the hammer or the nail? You better want to be the
hammer. Every week it gets a little better and our program is heading
in the right direction and moving pretty fast.”
Tri-Village will hold its school fair this week and for the first time,
end the festivities with a 7 p.m. game Saturday with Dayton Jefferson.
