GREENVILLE- It only took one goal scored to decide the outcome.

With 37:23 remaining, that lone goal was scored by Fairborn senior, Adam Knaub.

On a breakout, Knaub shot the ball past a diving A.J. Frens as Fairborn posted a 1-0 victory over Greenville in boys soccer Thursday at Harmon Field.

“It was a really great game,” said Wave coach Brent Devoss after the game. “The boys showed a lot of heart after a crushing defeat to Wayne the other night. Fairborn, another great team from the GWOC and we stuck right in there with them. We gave up that goal early in the second half but we kept our heads up and kept fighting.”

It was a night when the Wave had their share of chances to put the ball in the net.

Despite giving up the one goal, it was Frens that kept Greenville in it, making save after save.

“A.J. had a really great game tonight,” said DeVoss. “It was another great game from him keeping us in the game. I really can’t say enough about him. He’s only a junior and he’s getting better and better every day. He did a great job. That player (Knaub) carved us up pretty good and snuck it in by the near post. It was an outstanding effort by Fairborn to get that one in.”

On offense, it was one lost opportunity after another.

“We put it down as seven missed opportunities,” admitted DeVoss. “I actually saw three true opportunities to finish and we didn’t do it. Mac Kirk barely missed one wide and we missed a couple of headers that should have been put in the back of the net”

Now 2-3 on the season, the Wave has shown promise this season with wins over Lehman and Milton-Union.

With only five seniors, the Wave still face an uphill battle with youth.

“We are a very young team but we are strong with our juniors and freshman. Our sophomores held strong tonight,” stated DeVoss. “This year, we’ve got depth. Players mature as they get older and our juniors have been playing varsity since they were freshman. I feel confident in bringing in my freshman when I go to the bench.”

Greenville will see action again today at 11 AM at National Trail, varsity only.
