Trojans run rule Patriots in conference play
Siculan two hits Tri-Village

NEW MADISON- Arcanum sophomore Elle Siculan may be short in stature but the Trojans pitcher was head and shoulders above the opposition Friday at Tri-Village.

Siculan allowed just two hits to the Patriots, a leadoff double in the first Kloey Murphy and one in the fourth Payge Malott as Arcanum dropped a 15-0 loss on Tri-Village in a five inning run rule contest.

“Elle did a great job tonight,” said Arcanum coach Rick Stone. “She’s coming off a leg injury and she’s battled through it. She went out there and threw strikes. I told her not to give out any free passes (walks) and she’ll do fine. Tonight, she did exactly what we told her and she shut them down.”

In the five inning affair, Siculan struck out four with the remaining 11 out being made by the defense behind her.

Arcanum scored two in the opening frame when with one down, Logan Stone would single to left.

Brittany Kinney would then reach on a fielder’s choice with both scoring later in the inning.

The Trojans would tack on three more in the second the blow things open in the fourth, sending 14 to the plate and scoring nine runs, making the score 14-0 at that point.

“The key to our success has been our offense,” Stone stated. “We’ve been hitting the ball very well this season. We’re very aggressive on the base paths. The girls have real good softball instincts and they know the game very well. They don’t hesitate. The just see the game and they go. They don’t ask me, they just do it.”

Playing errorless softball, the Trojan defense shined.

“We’ve been playing well all year long and our defense has been there when it needs to be,” Stone stated. “We have a solid defensive team.”

Starting six freshmen and no seniors, Patriot coach Traci Barhorst is not disappointed with what she is seeing from her team.

“I told the kids tonight that there’s been a lot of improvement and I saw it tonight,” said Barhorst. “We’ve made a lot of steps up to become a varsity team. We made some plays tonight that we’ve been struggling on this season.  On offense, we’re hitting the ball but they’re just finding gloves instead of finding holes.”

With such a young team, Barhorst want to see one thing and that’s improvement.

“Score means nothing to us right now,” Barhorst pointed out. “Two weeks ago, a game like this was nerve-racking. Now, I think they are getting it. They are making improvements. Our goal is to progress each game and that’s still our goal. It’s hard! Nobody like to lose but we are growing as a team. I’ve seen them go from nervous freshmen to starter freshmen and I’m happy to see this. We’re getting better and we will be fine.”

Now 10-1 (6-0 CCC) the Trojans will host Marion Local tonight as the 1-5 Patriots will travel to Yellow Springs to faceoff with the Lady Bulldogs.

Both games are non-conference and will start at 5 p.m.
