F-M wins tough
game with Newton
Jets score four in the fifth

PITSBURG- In softball, there are many keys to winning.
Monday, Franklin Monroe used them all.
Good pitching, solid defense and most of all, clutch hitting that
created scoring opportunities.
Trailing 1-0 heading into the bottom of the fifth, the Lady Jets were
able to plate four big runs in a 4-2 come from behind victory over
Newton.
Putting the ball into play and forcing the action was all it took and
it started with a free pass to Morgan Bingham.
One out later, it was two freshmen that done the bulk of the damage.
Bridget Filbrun singled to center, moving Bingham to third, bring up
Kennedy Morris.
With runners stand at second and third, Morris sent one to straightaway
center, to triple in two runs.
“It all started with a walk,” said Jets coach Mike Morris. “I tell the
girls that I don’t care how they do it, just get on base. I think we
had two girls get hit by pitches tonight and I think we’ve got about 20
of those this season. So if teams want to go outside with the pitches,
we’ll clog the plate and if they want to come in on us, we’ll take the
pitch and move on to first. They don’t care how they get on as long as
they get on. When we put runners on, we make things happen and that’s
what we did tonight.”
After taking the 2-1 lead, FM plated two more in the frame on a RBI
single from Carrie Baker and a run scoring single from junior pitcher
Emily Morris.
On the night, Emily Morris gave up single runs in the third and the
seventh turning in a stellar pitching performance.
“Emily had a good night,” said Morris. “She had a couple of rocky
innings but overall a good night. She allowed the one run early but
buckled down and shut them down until the seventh.”
Newton took the early lead in the third when with two down, senior
Kylie Schaurer got a infield single.
Senior Mattie Malette tripled her home and the Indians held a 1-0 lead.
That was all Morris would allow until the seventh when Newton would
strike again, all with two down.
At that point the wheels started to come off and Morris made a trip to
the pitching circle.
“I had to go out there and tell everyone to calm down and get this last
out,” said Morris. “I could afford to let this game get out of hand.
Newton always brings it ‘A’ game andtonight was no exception. They were
doing exactly what we had done in the fifth. They were putting the ball
into play and forcing the action.”
On the night, the Jets committed just one error, that coming in the
final frame.
“We usually have about three errors a game,” said Morris. “Tonight we
had some great plays in the field. Even though the one error cots us a
run, it didn’t hurt us. I take games like this every day.”
With the win, the Jets went to 7-4 on the season and will play
Tri-Village Thursday.
