Greenville posts big GWOC victory over Piqua
Six run sixth puts it out of reach for Wave

GREENVILLE- Coming off an 8-1 loss at Piqua Tuesday, Greenville coach Jerrod Newland decided it was time to get back to basic Lady Wave softball.

Putting the ball into play and forcing Piqua to make plays led to a 10-2 Greenville GWOC victory Wednesday at the Stebbins Softball Complex.

“Good things happen when you put the ball into play,” said Newland. “It was Lady Wave softball at its best tonight. We hit the ball and forced them to make the plays. They made mistakes and we took advantage of them. We ran the bases well and when you pitch and play defense the way we did, good things happen. Hanes (Makayla) made a ton of plays at third and Kester (Ashton made a couple of gems at short. When you pitch, keep the ball down and play defense, great things are going to happen.”

Holding a slim 4-2 lead, Greenville decided to break out the whooping sticks in the sixth.

Highlighted by a two run bomb off the bat of Kester with freshman Lani Shilt standing at second. Kester took a 3-2 pitch over the left field fence starting a six run rally that sent 10 hitter to the dish.

“That was a crazy inning,” said Newland. “The whole place was yelling at me because I didn’t bunt the ball but she sent one about 240 feet over the fence. I’m glad the goal post (foul pole) was out there because the ball was hooking foul. That was just a huge two run shot for us and thing were contagious after that.”

On the night, the Wave pounded out nine hits while scoring 10 runs. Aided by four Piqua errors, Greenville made the Indians pay dearly for ever mistake.

In the pitching circle, it was another senior tat was getting the job done…Allison Minnich.

Minnich checked the Tribe on four hits. Despite only recording one strikeout, Minnich allowed her defense to do its job.

Allowing both runs in the fourth, Minnich shined for the Wave.

“Allison threw the ball great tonight,” admitted Newland. “She kept the ball down and kept the off balance. We made great plays behind her and good things happened for us.”

After falling to the same Piqua team the night before and being checked on three hits, the feeling a better things to come might be on the horizon for the 10-3 Wave.

Winning this game means a lot after what happened last night,” Newland pointed out. “I knew we were going to go out there, tee it up and play better softball. Unfortunately, we didn’t take care of business yesterday but today, we came out, too our shot and went right back at them. We are getting better every day. We are just a work in progress. We got our 10th win tonight and we’ll get our next 10 and we’ll make a fieldtrip in June (State in Canton).

“It was a great day at the stadium and I think we could have beat the Olympic team today,” Newland said in conclusion.

Greenville will play two on Saturday with Edgewood  and Waynesville starting at noon.
