GREENVILLE- “These are the fun meets. It allows us to experiment.”

Those were the words of Greenville track coach Bill Plessinger after Greenville won the girls and boys meet with Tipp City and Union City Tuesday.

On the girls side of the ledger, Greenville posted a two point win over the Lady Red Devils, 76-74 with the Indians picking up 35 points.

In the boys meet, the Wave tallied 76 points with Tipp earning 71 and the Tribe getting 30 points on the night.

Greenville pick up seven team wins by the guys, with two very impressive performances.

In the pole vault, the Wave took the top three spots led by junior AJ Frens with a winning vault of 15’6”. Sophomore Ryan Trick was second, falling two feet behind Frens while sophomore Mathew Hounshell was third.

The other came in the 110 hurdles as junior Folger Pyles took top honors in a time of 18.69 seconds, grabbing the attention of the Wave coach.

“I’ve been searching for a 110 hurdler for eight years,” said Plessinger. “Folger broke 19 seconds and he’s the first boy to break 19 in many years. In fact, I don’t remember how many years it’s been since I’ve seen that here. He is progressively getting faster and faster so I was pretty impressed with his time.”

Plessinger also spoke of a few others.

“Mac Kirk won the hundred (12.38) and we’ve not had a boy win the hundred in many years,” Plessinger pointed out. “I was very happy with the 4x100 relay and that winning time (46.92). So as a coach, you want to see these kind of times. I’ve got five boys and five girls that excel in this event so when the GWOC comes along, I don’t know what I’m going to do. It’s a nice problem to have but someone will be very disappointed when I have to make the decision.”

In the girls meet, it was a solid night for sophomore Hope Byrum.

Byrum won the 100 meters in a time of 14.01 seconds and crossed the line first in the 4x100 relay (55.57 seconds), winning at the line over Tipp City.

“It’s funny,” said Plessinger. “This is the first time these girls ever ran this event together. Hope had her best time in the hundred but we’ve had some issues in the 4x100. Hope has been in the national cheer competition in Florida and tonight was her first meet of the year actually. We’ve had six girls run in this event this year. It’s been interesting. Right now, no matter who I throw in there, they’re running pretty good times considering they practice their exchanges a half hour before the meet. Once I figure out my top four, we may be flirting with a school record.”

Also, senior Clohe McKinney played a huge part in the Lady Wave success but running the third leg of the winning 4x100 relay while winning the triple jump (29’4”) and the high jump (4’8”).

In other field events, sophomore Sierra Cress won the shot and the discus for the girls with senior Ben Whittington taking first in the discus (124’ 1”)

Greenville will head to Troy Friday for the Troy Invitational.
