ARCANUM- After a third place finish in the county volleyball tournament, Arcanum faced Franklin Monroe in the first Cross County Conference match of the season.

The Lady Trojans won the match in three sets but it wasn’t easy.

After taking the opening two sets by identical scores of 25-17, the third set was more of a struggle but the Trojans prevailed, 25-21.

“We played hard and the girls never gave up,” said FM coach Angie Filbrun. “I’m very proud of them.”

Not looking to lose in three set and take the sweep, Franklin Monroe came out of the huddle with the gloves on, ready to fight and that is what the Jets did.

Fight!

On a night when the Jets would never hold a lead, it seemed like they would get there on more than one occasion in the third.

Forcing ties on five different occasions, the Jets put the backs of Arcanum against the wall most of the time.

Arcanum would not be outplayed and would take the lead for good, breaking the final tie of the night, 19-19, on service points from junior Elle Siculan.

“We struggled in the last set,” said Arcanum coach Macey O’Dell. “I think our legs were giving out on us but in the last few games, I think we’ve gelled as a team. We’ve made some changes since the tournament and we’re coming together as a team. It’s still early in the year and we’re learning each other’s rolls as a team. I think tonight, we got it. We haven’t had practice lately and we’ve not had our conditioning either but overall, we played well and did an amazing jobtonight.”

While never giving up, the Trojans did exactly what was needed the whole night to gain a victory.

Hitting the floor and diving after balls to keep it alive and force the hand of the Jets, O’Dell was more than pleased with the effort.

“We were very good at hustling tonight,” O’Dell said of her team. “We didn’t let many balls drop tonight and that is something we worked on and worked on and tonight, they showed me that they’ve got it.”

Senior Stevie Johnting led the way for Arcanum recording 10 blocks and nine kills. Alongside of senior Shai Robinson with 14 kills, the Trojans were nearly unstoppable on the front line.

“Stevie had a great night,” admitted O’Dell. “Shai had a ton of kills also but everybody as a team played great. Getting the first league game is a great wat to start the season off.”

Even in losing, the Jets made a statement in the third set and Filbrun elaborated on the effort displayed by her team.

“We had goal in that last set and it came in baby steps,” said Filbrun. “These kids fought, fought, fought and they were almost there. Our timeouts were timely and they worked for us. Kids like Kennedy Morris, Maddie Scharr and this whole team worked hard tonight.”

Along with Johnting and Robinson, Brittany Kenny and Siculan combined for 29 assists while senior Lucy Shannon added 13 digs in support.

Arcanum will travel to Bradford Thursday while the Jets will host Twin Valley South.
