Lady Jets hang
tough in victory over Ansonia
FM pulls even at 3-3 on season

PITSBURG- In the consolation game of the Burkett Tournament at
Tri-Village, the Franklin Monroe Lady Jets rolled to a 56-37 victory
over Ansonia.
Thursday at The Hangar, FM welcomed the Lady Tigers in for a Cross
County Conference match-up.
Even though the results were the same, the game itself wasn’t.
Despite 31 turnovers, the Jets were able to cling to a 54-49 victory
over Ansonia.
“I’m feeling very fortunate right now,” said FM coach Abbey Moore.
“These girls are a great group and they’re having fun and it makes
coaching easy. We had a lot of turnovers but we were able to overcome
that with some really good defense. I’m feel blessed right now.”
On the floor, the Jets were paced by 5’10” freshman Corina Conley with
19 points and 11 rebounds.
A stellar effort by the young freshman.
“She averages a double-double,” said Moore. “She’s longer than what she
is in the book. She plays big and is very versatile as well. Several
times she drove coast to coast and it took the pressure off Audry
(Cable, a freshman with 14 points). She knew she had to take the
pressure off and by doing that, she helped our guards out.”
Down 43-40, Ansonia stayed within striking distance the final eight
minutes.
Junior Bailey Stammen, scoring 16 of her game high 20 in the second
half, opened up the fourth quarter by draining a 12 footer, getting the
Tigers to within a 43-42 count.
Conley would answer at the 5:51 mark of the frame with a bucket in the
paint and one off a free throw for a four point FM advantage.
Not to be outdone, Tiger senior Stefani Garrett would drop a trey just
39 seconds later and the Tigers were back to within one at 46-45.
The Jets would never lead by more than four until the 1:06 mark of the
game when Cable would hit the front end of a one-and-one giving the
Jets a five point, 54-49 edge.
While things ended on a positive note for the Jets, it didn’t start
that way.
Ansonia came out, seeking a little revenge from the Burkett by holding
the Jet offense to only nine first quarter points to take a 15-9 lead.
The Jets would storm back in the second quarter, holding the Tigers to
only seven points in the frame to take a 29-22 lead at the break and
only a slim 43-40 lead after three.
Starting three freshman, a sophomore and a junior, the Jets would often
bend but never break.
“This is a young, inexperienced group,” said Moore. “We’re learning but
with more experience, we’ll knock the shots down I see good things
coming down the road.”
With the loss, Ansonia dropped to 1-5 on the season.
“Turnovers killed us (25) and they were unforced turnovers” said
Ansonia coach Jim Bolin. “Right now we’re 1-5 and we should be 5-1 but
it’s all part of the game. Our kids come out to a good start and take
about five minutes off after that. They have no consistency on this
team. We haven’t come together yet as a team. We are five individuals
on the floor right now.”
