FM coach ready
for second season to begin
Moore looking for better days
By George Starks
PITSBURG- During her playing days at Franklin Monroe, then Abbey
Davenport was considered to be one of the best in Darke County.
Her mentality and love for the game made her one that would draw
attention from the opposing team.
Now, Davenport is a Moore and she has taken the challenge to lead her
high school to the next level and back to what it once was....a
basketball power at the D-IV level.
Coming off a 2-21 season, Moore will lose only one senior in Carrie
Baker and reflected on the 2016 season.
"The big thing about coming out of this season was obviously our
record," admitted Moore. "Our record doesn't show how we played this
year. We had six games where we lost by six or fewer points. These kids
never gave up. They really showed their character. Kids with the kind
of record we had, tend to give up when they fall behind. These kids
never quit. They always played until that final buzzer. That meant a
lot and going forward, we're going to build off of that."
Now with her initial season under her belt, Lady Jet basketball has
nowhere to go but up.
"We are all excited about basketball here at FM," said Moore. "It's
going to take some work but I think the group I have now, they
understand that and I'm looking forward to getting back in the gym."
According to Moore, she was dribbling a basketball at the age of two
and was a lover of the game.
Playing under Ned Gray as a student athlete, Moore often showed her
bulldog attitude on the floor from beginning to end.
Now, she wants to instill that same attitude in her players.
"I'm trying to teach them to be aggressive on the floor for 32
minutes," said Moore. "These kids have a lot of confidence. We played
right with a lot of good teams this year. I see good things for these
kids in the future. We are on track to getting this program back to
what it once was."
Losing only one senior, Moore has a solid group of kids coming up from
her junior high class (6) and sees positive things already.
"These kids coming up konws what winning is about and they know how to
win," Moore stated. "They won the junior high tournament this yeah and
I think that brought some excitement to the kids that didn't play this
past year. I've had those kids come to me saying they want to play next
season. That is exciting in itself."
Moore admits it's going to take as lot of time and effort on her part
but said in less than 30 days, her kids will be back in the gym,
preparing for the 2016-17 season.
