Bowling teams headed to state
Varsity Boys Bowling
The Versailles Varsity Bowling team traveled to Beavercreek on February
18 to bowl at the District Tournament. The top 4 teams and 4
individuals advanced to State. The District format was 3 regular games
and 6 baker games. The Tigers score after the first game was 1064
placing them in 1st out of 16 teams. They continued with a strong game
2 score of 988 and then a 3rd game score of 993 for a total score of
3045 and a 4th place seed going into Baker games.
“We started off a little slow in the first baker game with a score of
146. I reminded the boys to stay focused knowing once they
settled at the lanes their scores would pick up,” said Coach
Groff. As the day progresses the lanes change and dry out
so the boys were faced with adjustments and equipment changes.
They picked up steam with the remaining Baker scores: 200, 213, 214,
173, and 136. A 6-game total of 1082 gave them a total score for the
day of 4127. The crowd remained on pins and needles until the
end. The Tigers finished 4th, only 22 pins above 5th place
Mechanicsburg and secured their spot at the State Tournament.
“I have said all season that this group of boys should make it to the
State Tournament if they can come together and bowl to their
potential,” said Coach Phlipot. “I couldn’t be more proud of them
and also of Coach Groff for being a strong leader. Usually the
boys and girls bowl at different times of day and I am able to be
present to help both teams but starting today it was no longer a
possibility. We have a great coaching staff in Coach Groff and Coach
Ward,” said Coach Phlipot. “It was great to see them put it all
together and work as a team,” said Coach Groff.
Kyle Cotner had the Tigers’ high series of the day with a 690 (221,
225, 244) with a 4th place overall and a spot on the All District Team.
Other individual scores were: Luke Shellhaas 233, 190, 203 = 626;
Jacob Wenig 188, 204, 207 = 599; Brody Hyre 212, 215, 155 = 582; Alex
Groff 210, 154, 184 = 548. Senior Michael Hemmelgarn also bowled well
in the Bakers to help keep the Tigers in contention for advancement to
State
The Tigers will travel to Wayne Webb’s Bowl in Columbus to compete on
Friday, February 26 at 10:00. Format for the State Tournament
includes 3 Regular games and 3 Baker games followed by a cut to the top
8 teams. Competition then is a Head to Head Match play in Bracket
format with advancement of the team winning the best out of 5 Baker
games.

Lady Tiger Bowlers
On February 18th the Tigers traveled to Beavercreek to bowl at the
District Tournament, finishing 3rd overall and advancing to the State
tournament. Scores for the regular games were 914, 953, and 946 with a
score of 2813 and a 3rd place seed leading into the Baker games.
“The girls bowled with a lot of effort and determination to start the
day and provided us with some cushion leading into the Baker games. I
was proud to see the girls take the pressure of tournament play and
stay focused and successful,” said Coach Phlipot. Baker scores for
Versailles: 213, 151, 179, 139, 179, 146 for a final team score total
of 3920. There was a high pin spread from game to game due to a tough
lane but the Tigers held strong and worked to make changes as needed.
The Tigers also represented as individuals with one team member making
the all-tournament team. Hannah Niekamp’s scores were: 228, 197,
214= 639 series and 7th place overall. With this score she was a
member of the All District Team that represented the top 8 bowlers
overall. Other impressive individual efforts were seen by Olivia
Bruening: 188, 195, 205= 588 series and 11th place; Brigette Holsapple:
179, 212, 191= 582 series; Morgan Heitkamp: 152, 179, 189= 520 series;

“It is good to bowl personal best scores at this stage in the
season. I hope we keep this momentum heading into our final week
of bowling,” said Coach Phlipot. This will be the first time that
both the Versailles Boys and Girls teams will be traveling to Columbus
together to compete at the State Tournament. The State Tournament
will be held at Webb Lanes in Columbus, OH. The boys compete first on
February 26th starting at 10:00. The girl’s tournament is held
the following day on February 27th also with a start time of 10:00.
