Lady Tigers Bowling
4th in State
The Tigers traveled to Columbus to bowl at Wayne Webb Lanes to bowl in
State competition on February 27th. They finished 4th overall
losing in match play in the semi-finals to Napoleon. “Our day started
slow but we were able to work our way up from 12th place to 7th heading
into match play. The cut include the top 8 teams and we knew it
would be close all morning,” said Coach Phlipot. Close it was as
the Tigers were forced into a roll off against Maysville to determine
the 7th and 8th spot. Senior, Hannah Niekamp impressed under
pressure bowling well in a 9th and 10th frame roll off. “I was
nervous but ready to push my team into match play. I was told by Coach
to relax and let the ball roll,” said Hannah Niekamp.
The Tiger’s scores for the 3 regular games were: 815, 873, 814: 2502
total. Hannah Niekamp finished 9th and earned 2nd team All-Ohio: 204,
182, 214: 600 series. Brigette Holsapple finished 30th overall:
183, 191, 172: 546 series, Morgan Heitkamp finished 63rd overall: 159,
173, 148: 480 series, Olivia Bruening finished 66th overall: 139, 204,
135: 478 series, and combined scores added to the overall score from
Maggie Hedrick, Morgan Barlage, Makenzie Berning, and Brooke Condon.
“We knew it was close heading into Baker games so I told the girls they
needed to stay focused and bowl their best. We were 25 pins from the
cut heading into Baker games,” said Coach Phlipot. Baker scores
for the Lady Tigers were 179, 198, 180: 557 and a total score 3059. The
girls bowled the 2nd highest Baker total out of all 16 teams.
After a lunch break the Tigers went into match play at 7th seed and
bowled Norton (2nd seed). Match play involved best of 5 Baker Games.
The Tigers started off slow losing the first 2 games to Norton scoring
172-187 and 149-156. The girls held on and came out ahead in the 3rd
game 177-162. Brigette Holsapple picked up a split in the 4th frame
that changed the momentum. The Tigers continued strong and defeated
Norton in the last 2 games 184-160 and 185-163.
The Tigers advanced to the semi-final match where they met Napoleon.
Although they fought hard they lost the first 3 games 138-168, 166-171,
and 137-169. “There is a lot of pressure involved when you advance to
this stage of competition and the girls handled the pressure
well. We could not pick up necessary spares and in the end this
cost us,” said Coach Phlipot. “We are really going to miss the
leadership and skill from our two seniors Hannah Niekamp and Olivia
Bruening. They helped keep the team focused and determined
throughout a tough day and together the girls climbed up from behind to
get to the semi-final match. We had a really great season and the girls
are all very proud of their effort. History was made for Lady Tigers
Bowling with Hannah having the highest place finish overall as an
individual and the team advancing the farthest in State tournament
play.”
Top 8 Team Results: Mechanicsburg, Napoleon, Coldwater, Versailles,
Norton, Northwestern, Fairport Harding, Maysville
Varsity Boys Bowling
13th in State
The Division II State Tournament was held at Wayne Webb Lanes in
Columbus, OH on February 26th. Versailles and 15 other teams competed
for the State title. This title was won by Urbana. Versailles had a
13th place finish and did not make the mid-day cut. “As play
began it was apparent that many bowlers were hot and making strikes. We
knew we needed to execute in all aspects of our game to make the cut to
the top 8,” said Coach Phlipot. “We picked up our spares and the boys
did a great job with those but we just were not able to tally the
strikes like the competition. Last year the boys made the cut to the
top 8 and headed into match play with a total score of 3288. This
year the boys rolled 3335 and this just was not enough.”
Starting the day with 3 regular games Versailles team scored: 912, 954,
944= 2810 total . Luke Shellhaas finished 35th overall: 193, 212, 218:
623 series, Alex Groff finished 49th overall: 217, 183, 187: 587
series, Brody Hyre finished 51st overall: 202, 167, 217: 586 series,
Kyle Cotner finished 66th overall: 154, 224, 181: 559 series, Combined
scores were added by Jacob Wenig, Aydan Moran, Brandon Bradley, and
Michael Hemmelgarn.
The Tigers then bowled 3 Baker games: 181, 168, 176 for 525 total. This
gave the Tigers an overall score of 3335.
“I am proud of the boys finish to a great season. They really came
together at the right time and should be proud of their hard work
showing in their State appearance. Michael Hemmelgarn, our lone senior,
was able to finish the 10th frame of Baker play with 3 strikes. A
good spare game will usually win matches, unfortunately today this just
was not the case. It will be exciting to watch these boys over the next
few years. Our goal continues to be to bring a trophy home for the
trophy case.”
