Northeastern no problem for Versailles
Lady Tigers advance to sectional finals

PITSBURG- When the first quarter buzzer had sounded, the Northeastern Lady Jets were close to Versailles, trailing only 14-10.

Close is all the Jets would ever be to Versailles Wednesday at The Hangar.

The Tigers would open up the second frame on an 8-0 run, sparked by two early treys from junior Kami Ording.

That spark helped open up a huge 32-16 lead at the break as Versailles would roll into the sectional finalsSaturday, posting a 53-35 victory.

“I really thought that second quarter was a big quarter for us,” said Versailles coach Jackie Stonebreaker. “We came out in the second quarter and just smothered them defensively. Kami (Ording) came into the game and hit two huge three’s off the bench. That helped give us a big lead at the half and we never really extended that lead in the second half and they didn’t close in to us. That second quarter was a big quarter for us but it was defense that won us this game.”

At that point, the only thing left to be decided was the final score as Versailles led big after three, 42-25.

On the boards, the Tigers dominated. Versailles yanked down 32 rebounds (11 offensive) to only 18 total for the Jets.

“I felt like we dominated them especially in the first half,” said Stonebreaker. “We got some easy buckets from some offensive rebounds and we kept them off the boards defensively.”

“With the offense and defense clicking in the final three frames for the Tigers, it was far from a perfect game.

From the line, Versailles struggled, hitting only eight of 18 attempts from the charity stripe.

“We’re just not shooting well from the free throw line right now,” admitted Stonebreaker. “I don’t know what to chalk it up as. I feel like all year it’s been our achilles heel. I swear we practice them. We practice them every day. We shoot 30 or 40 free throws a day…I don’t know.”

Led by Lauren Monnin with 16 and Danielle Winner with a dozen, the Tigers put eight players in the books and will head into the section finals Saturday against Middletown Madison in a game set for 2 pm.

The Mohawks beat out Dayton Christian 46-25 in the opening game of the night.
