Franklin Monroe
no match for Arcanum
Trojans bench too much for Jets
By George Starks
ARCANUM-With only seven players in uniform and 6-1 junior Hannah Eley
on crutches, the Franklin Monroe Lady Jets were over matched as Arcanum
dumped a 64-21 loss on its backyard rivals from Pitsburg.
With Arcanum trailing 6-4 and 4:16 left in the opening quarter, the
Lady Trojans went on an 8-2 run to close out the half with a 14-6
advantage.
In the second stanza, it was the Trojan defense that turned up the heat
as FM committed eight turnovers.
The biggest difference came in the scoring column.
Arcanum came out of the second quarter gates, going on a 13-0 run
before the Jets could muster a bucket from Kinsey Goins at the 1:23
mark of the half.
At that point, the writing was on the wall as the Trojans held a
commanding 34-10 lead at the break.
“We came out and we played really hard,” said Arcanum coach Matt Grote.
“We got some good shots to fall and we were able to run the floor. We
talked about doing the little things right tonight and we did. The kids
played hard as I knew they would and we got the job done.”
It didn’t take long for the Trojans to wear down the legs of the FM
players.
With a full squad to run in and out for Grote to the seven and even six
players later in the game for Franklin Monroe, Grote had nothing but
praise for Jets coach Abbey Moore and her players.
“It was a gutsy effort and they played really hard,” Grote stated. “We
knew they would come in here and play hard. They work hard every day in
practice. They’ve had some unfortunate injuries and I hope the one that
went down tonight is okay. Coach Moore does a good job and given some
time, things will get better there and the girls’ team will be there.”
The Jets came out with all guns blazing, jumping out to a 4-0 lead
early before Arcanum got on the board on a 15 foot jumper from Brittany
Kinney at the 6:02 mark of the quarter.
With three players in double figures, the ability to protect the ball
on offense played a huge role in the Arcanum victory as the Trojans had
only 10 miscues.
“We’ve been working on that,” admitted Grote. “After a couple of losses
in a row, we went back to fundamentals, learning to take care of the
ball and getting good shots.”
As for the Jets, it was a very tough loss for Moore’s team.
“These kids came out tonight and gave me their all and they gave me
their best effort,” said Moore after the game. “They came out and they
played hard. I’m proud of their effort and the way they played. They
never gave up. We’re short on players and I push them hard in practice
but Arcanum wore us down. With seven girls, it’s hard to get those legs
but my girls are giving it their all and we will continue to work hard.”
With the win, Arcanum goes to 7-6 on the year and 5-2 in the Cross
County Conference while the Jets fall to 2-10 and 2-5 in conference
play.
