Patriots
getting ready for 2016 season
Seven on seven just the first step

ARCANUM- If the third time being the charm, the Tri-Village coach Jason
Schdelmyer (Shondo) must be feeling blessed in what he’s seen in his
passing game thus far.
Thursday, the Patriots traveled to Arcanum for a little seven on seven
passing scrimmage for the third one of the season.
Going up against Ansonia, Brookville, Lehman Catholic, Dixie and host
Arcanum, it was the Patriots final tune-up before two-a-days start in
just a couple of weeks.
The scrimmage was the third type of scrimmage for the Patriots in a
short period of time and Shondo was quite pleased with the efforts of
his team.
“I’m pleased with what I seen today. There’s been a lot of improvement
since this point last year (JV only),” said Shondo. “Our kids are
competing and they are starting to figure out the game of football.”
Playing only a junior varsity schedule, senior quarterback Jonny Wilson
will take the Patriots into battle on opening night at Tri-Village
against the Jefferson Broncos.
Wilson looked good against some seasoned teams Thursday.
“He looked really sharp and had played really well,” said Shondo. “He
was understanding his reads better and the timing of the routes. It’s
getting better and he’s done a nice job up to this point.”
With receivers like Trace Couch and Austin Brunner, the T-V coach was
quick to point out another receiver.
“I though Gavin Richards did a real nice job making several catches,”
said Shondelmyer. “We have a lot of athletes and a lot of skilled guys.
We just have to be able to go out there and actually compete.”
While many coaches don’t see a lot in a passing only scrimmage, Shondo
does.
“A seven on seven helps your timing offensively and it helps your
defensive routes as far as your drops are concerned,” Shondo pointed
out. “It also allows you to see where your athleticism is. I like where
we are athletically right now but we still need to get better on the
offensive and defensive lines and in the trenches. That is where you
win football games.”
On defense, the Pats pass coverage was like the rest of the team.
“We are showing improvement there also,” said Shondo. “We have really
been working on our pass defense and we know we’ve got solid athletes
back there in coverage. We don’t want these kids to play cautious. We
want them to be aggressive and attack the ball and fly to it. We want
them to play with confidence and make a break on the ball. They
understand if they pick it, they’re going to be heroes and if they
don’t pick it, it’s not going to be good but they understand that and
that’s how we play.”
With opening night just over a month away, Shondelmyer admitted there’s
a lot of work that needs to be done but he said he confident in his
team that is still in its infancy.
