Patriots
prevail in sectional title win
Wilson pitches a gem
By George Starks
COVINGTON- Tri-Village junior Jonny Wilson may have pitched his best
game of the 2016 season so far.
Coming into Wednesday’s sectional final game with Franklin Monroe.
Wilson brought a miniscule 0.76 E.R.A. to the table
Wilson didn’t hurt that average after the Patriots 5-2 win to take the
sectional title Wednesday.
In the seven innings pitched, Wilson was nearly unstoppable allowing
just one earned run on the night.
Wilson checked the Jets on just six hits while striking out four and
walking three.
“Man, he’s on a roll,” said Patriots coach Jim Maples. “He’s got five
complete games with two shutouts, two-one run games and one-two run
games. He’s just throwing the ball very, very well.”
Coming in with a 12-8-1 mark, the Jets scored first with a marker in
the third.
With one down, Jeremy Bridenbaugh doubled to center and would later
score on a double off the bat of Landon Peters.
The Patriots would get even in the bottom of the frame as Wilson would
help his own cause with a run scoring single to right, plating Jordon
Buckley.
It was the fourth that made the difference for the Patriots.
With one down, Christen Ricker would reach on an error.
After Luke Wheeler would fly out to center for the second out of the
inning, the Patriots offense would go to work.
Highlighted by a two run single to center by Trey Frech, the Patriots
would take advantage of another Jet miscue and plate four big runs,
taking a 5-1 lead.
“We did it all with two down,” said Maples. “This is something we’ve
been needing all year and lately, it’s been happening. We took
advantage of their mistakes and it was just a good night for us. We got
big production from there bottom of the lineup and we need that. We had
some clutch hits and we ran the bases smart. Trey smoked that ball to
center scoring the last two runs of the inning for us and he’s been
struggling lately. Some good things happened for us today and I’m
thrilled to death.”
With the Patriots offense banging out six hits on the night, it was the
defense that made Maples smile.
With the Jets at the dish in the fifth and FM senior Zach Hyre up, Hyre
ripped a fly ball to right that was curving away from Jordon Midlam.
Right before the ball dropped, Midlam dove for the ball, making the
spectacular catch and sending the Jets senior back to the bench.
“To win a sectional title and get this far, your defense has to help
you out,” said Maples. “That play that Jordon Midlam made in right
field, I thought was huge. We had a couple of other plays here on the
infield that was nice from Chris Ricker. He’s been struggling with his
throws lately at third and he played well. He had one error there in
the seventh but the other plays, he was making them out there. Tanner
(Maples) is as good of a first baseman that I’ve ever coached. He makes
the rest of our defense look good. Jordon Buckley calls a great game
behind the plate. There’s a lot of coaches out there. This was a total
team effort tonight and you don’t get it done without the pitching. The
guys behind you has to make the plays to and we were pretty solid
tonight in the field.”
On the other side of the field, FM coach Eddie Myers had very little to
say.
“We didn’t come out and play our game,” said Myers. “We didn’t come out
and hit the way we are supposed to. I’ll give them (T-V) credit.
They’re a very good ball club. Wilson came out a threw a heck of a game
for them and we couldn’t come out and make the plays.”
Now 15-12, the Patriots will play for a district title tonight in a
game scheduled to be played at Centerville.
