Lady Jets
squeak out huge sectional win
Defense sets tone for FM
By George Starks
PITSBURG- When it comes to winning at most sports, the recipe is simple.
Score the most points and play solid defense.
In the case of the Franklin Monroe Lady Jets, it was a combination of
both.
Senior Bryanna Diceanu netted both goals for FM Tuesday as the Jets
turned the tables on Greenview in a 2-1 opening round sectional victory.
In the final game of the season, it was the Rams that dropped a 2-1
loss on the Jets.
With 38:32 left in the first half, Diceanu hit the first goal for a 1-0
lead.
Getting the early goal was exactly what FM coach Scott Howell wanted to
see happen.
“We talked about this in the pre-game,” said Howell. “Not having the
wind and there were some 30 mile an hour gusts tonight, we needed to
score within the first two minutes and we did.”
At that point, the Jets played defense, making the Rams do all the
running and it worked.
“I think they got tired and in the second half, we played our game,”
Howell pointed out.
The 1-0 lead held up until the3:22 mark of the half.
With the Rams on the attack, it was a shot from Kelsey Farris that
found the back of the net off a header from freshman Mckyna Woods that
put the score at 1-1 at the break.
Diceanu got the winning goal with 27:57 left in the game but it is what
happened nearly eight minutes later.
Looking to gain a 2-2 tie, the Rams took a shot on goal that was
knocked down by senior goalie Allyson Masterson.
What happened after that, no one really knows.
The ball headed again for the net, not once but twice and both times
the Rams were denied access to the score.
A big defensive stand that saved the game for Franklin Monroe and
Howell.
“That was huge and I’m not sure what happened there,” admitted Howell.
“My goalie got caught out and somehow, the ball got knocked out of
there. That was a game saver right there and it saved the team. It was
huge. We were playing with a little bit of heart and I think that took
the wind out of their sails.”
Next up for the Jets will be Dayton Christian on Saturday at Dayton
Christian starting at 7 pm.
“This is a team we should’ve won against earlier in the season but we
need a little more energy and more heart than we had tonight,” said
Howell. “I think it’s going to be 2-1 one way or the other.”
Dayton Christian pounded Yellow Springs 10-0 in its first round opening
gameTuesday.
Greenville lost at Valley View Tuesday, 10-0 to finish the season
winless.
