Franklin Monroe
remains undefeated in boys soccer
Freshman scores both goals for Jets

PITSBURG- If you last name is Diceanu and Danny is your dad, then
soccer is in your blood.
If you don’t play soccer at Franklin Monroe for your dad, then you may
not be playing any sports there at all.
Not only did Franklin Monroe top Newton, 2-0, Tuesday in Cross County
Conference play but it was freshman Brydon Diceanu that scored both
goals for the Jets.
Diceanu gave the Jets the 1-0 lead at the 7:00 mark of the opening half.
His second came with 11:20 left in the game.
“We played with good spirit I thought tonight,” said FM coach Danny
Diceanu. “Our energy was good, our emotion was good and sometimes we
were a little strong but it’s always a heated battle with Newton. It’s
a nice rivalry.”
With the battle lines drawn, the Jets came out playing like a Diceanu
coached team would be expected to play.
Franklin Monroe attacked the ball and was very aggressive, keeping the
ball on the their end of the field for most of the game.
“Our energy was really good and our willingness to want to play was
there,” Diceanu stated. “We came out ready to play the game and we
never let up. We won some very tough battles out there. We committed to
tackles and this was our toughest opponent to date and we just seemed
to rise to the opponent. We’ll see how we rebound from this come
Saturday with Seven Hills. A whole different animal comes to town. This
was a good warm-up for it.”
When it came to defense, Newton played well.
The difference?
“We created chances,” said Diceanu. “We kept the ball on their end most
of the time and got a couple of nice goals. We had a lot of shots
because of the chances we created. We were aggressive. I liked the
intensity and the level of energy we played with. I keep stressing that
to the kids and tonight, we stepped up and played well.”
With the coaches son scoring the goals, Diceanu looked at a senior who
helped create those opportunities.
Jake Shellabarger.
“Jake was a work horse out there for us tonight,” Diceanu said. “Brydon
may have scored the goals but Jake created those opportunities for him.
Jake was a handful for them (Newton).”
With a two goal lead and over 11 minutes left to play, Diceanu said he
was able to take a breath but was still nervous.
“It’s nice to have that one goal cushion,” said Diceanu. “A two goal
lead is the most dangerous lead because you can relax a little. If you
give up a goal, you still have a one goal lead and it can become a
battle.”
With the win, the Jets move to 5-0 on the season.
