T-V even at 2-2 on season

NEW MADISON- In front of a huge crowd, the Tri-Village Patriots made a huge statement, especially on defense.

With both teams coming in with identical 1-2 marks, it was the Patriots that went to 2-2 in a 34-0 drubbing of Riverview Friday.

“It’s nice to get a win after two big losses,” said Patriots coach Jason Schondelmyer after the game. “You try to explain to these guys that haven’t played much football how much time and energy goes into each week. So each week is very valuable so it was great to get one tonight.”

Led by senior Jared Buckley, the Pats allowed a miniscule 34 yards of offense by the visiting Hawks of Riverview East.

With many pass plays being broken up by Tri-Village, Buckley shot the gap many times, scoring no less than three times, sacking Hawks quarterback Kaleb Jackson for numerous losses.

It was a defense that came out and smacked the Hawks in the mouth with some big hits.

“It was good,” admitted Shondo of his defense. “We had a few varsity hits tonight and that’s what we’ve been trying to stress to the guys is that we need to get to that physical level to where we are getting those varsity hits. I’m as pleased about the defense as anything. To come out here and get the shutout is a big confidence booster for us. We’re learning how to be physical on Friday nights. ”

On offense, Buckley ran wild rushing for 178 yards on 13 carries and one touchdown.

That score was a 61 yard bust by Buckley in the first quarter at the 9:56 mark.

On the Patriots next possession, it was senior quarterback Johnny Wilson finding paydirt from three yards out and the Patriots held a commanding 14-0 lead.

“Buckley had some hard runs out there tonight,” Schondelmyer stated. “What we’ve been trying to pound in on him is that they are not all going to be 25 yard gains. Some are going to be two or three yards and you have to take those. He’s strong and he runs well and he’s a good athlete. We want him to keep low pads and when he does that, he’s tough to bring down. ”

While the offense and defense shined, special teams did its job as well and the Patriots coach was more than pleased with his special team play.

“Even in the last two weeks that was the one bright spot for this team,” Shondo pointed out. “Overall it was a good night for them and we’re making extra points with them.”

With Wilson suffering an injury in the opening game of the season against Dayton Jefferson, the senior signal caller had a big night passing, hitting five of 10 for 74 yards and one scoring pass, a 25 yarder to Noah Burns in the third quarter.

“It was nice to have him back out there,” said Schondelmyer. “He’s got a lot of composure, he’s a great leader. The kids feel more confident in the huddle and it’s good to have him there.”

Now 2-2, Tri-Village will host Covenant Christian next Friday at 7 p.m.

Also it was announce that bronze medal winner Clayton will be home on September 30 with a 6 p.m. parade in New Madison.

The Patriots will host Gamble Montessori that night.
