Chance of a
Lifetime
By Naiesha Thobe, Teen Scribe
How many times does a person get to say that they designed a float for
a parade? Okay, if you’re into some big club or association, then fine,
you probably get to do it every year. However, when you’re not
particularly involved with much... well, getting that honour is
something totally cool.
I got the chance for County News Online; some of you probably saw me
and a few of my friends in the parade. We were doing a crossover of
Sherlock Holmes and news reporting... so, if we looked stingy and
didn’t wave, we were doing an ‘interrogation’. Not that many people
probably understood that. Not to mention that we kept grinning and the
magic of the scene was totally crushed. Put three teenage girls on a
float, two of whom are obsessed with Sherlock Holmes, one of whom has
such interesting stories... well, we tried to be in character some of
the time.
It was exceedingly fun. I mentioned in my blog that I had been in the
Annie Oakley Parade before, but I was just an asset at the time and not
the ring leader. Not to say that it wasn’t fun; riding on a convertible
with a bunch of people that I hadn’t known but people that were
interesting all the same. However... there’s just something different
when you’re the one running the float.
Not to mention that I got that what I call an-almost-concussion the
Tuesday before the parade. Talk about a headache. (And I am not
kidding.)
My friends and family were amazing in that they helped me when I wasn’t
able to. Of course, I felt bad when they were the ones helping me get
the decorations done ahead of time while I was laying on the couch with
a bag of ice on my head, but I digress. I managed to get over the
headache long enough to actually get most of it done myself.
I have people to thank… my parents for putting up with my taking on
projects and helping me accomplish them, Amber and Violet for being
super awesome with handing out flyers and running beside us (if you are
new to CNO and you came here because of one of those flyers, thank
Violet or Amber!), Kelly and Peyton for being my support on the float,
Jenilee for being my creative helper when I couldn’t do things for
myself, and Al (Greiner) for being our gracious chauffeur. And, of
course, Bob (Robinson), for letting me do this for County News Online,
and ultimately, allowing me to become a part of this website to begin
with.
This is just the beginning for County News Online. I hope that I’ll be
able to partake in more of these mild chances-of-a-lifetime in the
future, no matter where CNO may take us!
After all...
“There is nothing new under the sun.”
“WRONG.”
County News Online is the News of the Next Generation.
P.S. For those who happened to see us at the parade, and for those who
didn’t and are just interested anyway, the words on the back of our
float were:
Observe the clues,
Report the news.
Deduce the truth,
Become a slueth.
