Youth
For Christ...
“Set Me Free” skit a
powerful message for teens
By Kalista King
As you heard me say last week, a revival in today’s teenage generation
has broken out in Darke County, as more and more teens join our Youth
for Christ’s Friend2Friend program, Saturday Night Prayer, and other
events hosted through F2F.
This week, I would like to share about the “Set Me Free” skit that has
evolved through Greenville’s EUM youth group (also known as The
CornerShack). This skit has reached many people and will continue to
reach others as we perform it at a variety of places throughout the
next few months.
It came about as a few teens from The CornerShack and our youth group
leader, Marty McCabe, got together and contemplated on how to do a skit
for the youth group on Wednesday night. It was suggested that we do the
skit to Casting Crown’s song, “Set Me Free”, which a few of us had seen
before. We started out with about 10 students in the skit and performed
it for the other teens in the youth group the following Wednesday. The
skit was so powerful that many of the teens were moved to tears, and
almost all of them said they got “chills” from watching it.
Because it went so well for the youth group, we decided to perform it
at the Greenville High School talent show in February. We scheduled
practices 3 times a week for a whole month and even added a few other
people who were interested in joining. By the time of the talent show,
we had about 15 students participating in the skit who had all been
praying that God would use us to move in the hearts of those who came
to watch the talent show that night.
Though we knew the skit was very powerful and were certain that it
would touch a numerous amount of people who came, I don’t think any of
us were prepared for the audience’s reaction once the skit was over.
Everyone stood to their feet and gave us a standing ovation as whistles
and cheers rung out throughout the entire gym. None of us were too
concerned of the fact that we got a standing ovation, we were just
thrilled that God had given us the opportunity to share the skit with
most of our student body and the others who came to watch the talent
show that night.
What was even more exciting, was that once the talent show was over,
they announced the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners, and when they
announced EUM youth group for the 1st place prize of $100, we were more
than grateful that God had been glorified through it all!
Needless to say that after the talent show, many people asked us to
perform the skit elsewhere. Of course, we took the opportunities
because it is a privilege to be able to share this powerful skit with
everyone we can, not for our own glory, but for the One who is worthy
of all praise.
Last Monday, we had the privilege of performing it at Youth for
Christ’s Campus Life in Arcanum. This night was so incredibly powerful
that we had approximately 4 people who decided to become
Christ-followers for the first time and many students who recommitted
their lives to following Christ.
As you can see, this skit has had an outstanding impact on those who
have seen it and even we who participate in it. We look forward to
performing it on May 20th at First UMC in Greenville, and on June 3rd
at both Coletown Congregational Church (just before the Coletown
curve), and Teegarden Congregational Church in Ansonia.
Come see for yourself!
Editor: Kalista King is a
sophomore at Greenville High School. I first met her at Kiwanis a
couple of weeks ago. While I was familiar with the Youth for Christ
movement (I was told it started in California with its home base not
far from where I lived), I didn’t realize it was a growing movement in
our community. The presence and self-confidence of this young lady was
so impressive I asked her to provide our readers with an uplifting
message every Sunday. This is the second of her offerings to CNO
readers, young and old alike. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.
