Thankfulness
By Naiesha Thobe, Teen Scribe

First off, let me say sorry for the sudden vanishing of me and my writing. I'll write up a blog soon and explain everything.

Second off, happy Thanksgiving.

What are you thankful for?

I started listing things that I was thankful for and realized, a few items through, that I'm thankful for a lot of otherwise immaterial things. Maybe that makes me a bad person. I'd like to think not, though. I just have very strange priorities.

I'm thankful for my family. I appreciate everything that my parents have done for me, even when I've been irrationally stupid and ask for the near-impossible. They tolerate my (intelligent) idiocy, and that's a feat in itself.

I'm thankful for my friends. I'm not going to pretend that I haven't had friend problems, because I have. Everyone does. Some people that were really special to me, no longer talk to me. But I'm still thankful for them. They helped me grow. They were a part of my life that couldn't be replaced.

And then there's the friends that are there for me whenever I need them, also looking over my (intelligent) idiocy. (There is a meaning to my madness- I assure you- thus the 'intelligent idiocy'. Haha) The fact that they put up my random obsessions and awkwardness is just brilliant.

I'm thankful for the Brits. If you read my blog, you know I'm a big Britain at heart, and what would I do without my tea and the BBC? And who else would I credit my Banoffee pie that I've made for Thanksgiving to? (Not taste-tested yet, so I'll let you know if it's delicious or not.)

Really, I'm thankful for cross-country things. Where else would we get un-Americanized things like pizza or a telephone booth? It's just nice to think that so many references can stretch so far across the world. It's nice to have that little piece of a different country, a little piece of the foreign world around us right under our noses.

I'm thankful for, and feel free to laugh at me, Mr. Benedict Cumberbatch. You're thinking 'who'? Not many people know of him, and he doesn't know of me. (He's a British actor, fyi.) The whole concept might seem bizarre, but Mr. Cumberbatch has gotten me through some unhappy days. I can be having the worst day ever, and my go-to will be Benedict. And his acting or just his generalized humble self makes me smile. I think it's great when an actor's performance touches someone in ways they didn't imagine, and Mr. Cumberbatch always does that for me.

So silly. I know.

I'm thankful for books, and movies, and video games, and those sorts of immaterial things that no one really needs, but wants. I think it's nice that by turning a page, pushing a 'play' button, turning on a console, and etcetera, can take us all to a different world of time-travel or crime-solving, of saving the world or sailing the seven seas. I'm grateful to those sorts of things... but, then again, I am a writer.

I'm thankful for all the small things.

At least, I'm trying to be. I know there's still countless things that I overlook. We all overlook the little things in our everyday, bustling lives. But the flowers on the roadside, the wildlife, having conveniences like grocery stores or fast food, blankets, clothes, parties, and our freedom- that's what Thanksgiving is about. Being thankful for all the small things, as well as the big things. Being thankful for everything.

So, yes, looking back, my thankfulness list might seem like it includes very immaterial things. But, I'm genuinely grateful for each and every one of these things, and even more things that I haven't named.

Happy Thanksgiving, readers. Hopefully your day is filled with family and friends, fun and food. Being thankful for it all.

Thanks for reading.

(I never say it, but I'm always gracious to each and every one of my followers. Very, very grateful.)
