Not an easy choice
By Brittany Ulman
Sophomore Creative Writing Student Ball State University
Hello, my name is Brittany Ulman, a sophomore Creative Writing student
with a minor in Professional Writing and Emerging Media and another in
Spanish. I have contributed to County News Online several times
through my column “Just Chirpin’” located in the Youth Section.
In those columns, I discuss all of my personal experiences in college,
whether they were good or bad.
My life as a college student has definitely exposed me to some exciting
experiences and people, but also quite a few difficult decisions as
well. One of those decisions involved changing my major during my
freshman year, which was the topic of my first column. When I
started at Ball State, I was a dietetics major who had the intention of
working in the critical care unit of a hospital with patients who could
only eat through a feeding tube. However, as my college life
progressed, I realized that I had chosen a career that I would enjoy,
but not one I would love to do on a daily basis.
After weeks of deliberation with my family, professors, and advisor, I
came to the conclusion to change my major to Creative Writing so I
could pursue a career in editing/publishing. Even though I
definitely believe I made the right decision, it was not an easy one to
make at the time. I had my doubts about making such a
life-altering decision, especially after I had a professor who nearly
convinced me I had made a serious mistake.
Now that I have made that decision though, I am excited about not only
the rest of my college career, but my life upon graduation. With
my change in major, I was able to add not one, but two minors.
Also, by taking online summer classes, I will be able to graduate a
semester early and potentially participate in an internship. I
cannot begin to describe how eager I am to work with a publishing
company, providing people of all ages with great literature and
learning experiences. I will finally be able to transfer my deep
love for books into a lifestyle.
Editor: County News Online is pleased to be able to offer insight into
the successes and challenges our local young people face. Brittany has
agreed to publish two projects she completed for her Digital Literacies
English course.
