‘We are the Majority’
Peer Leaders attend Leadership Training
By Molly Hunt
On February 7, 2015 youth from Darke and Shelby County attended a
Youth-Led Prevention workshop at Edison Community College in Piqua. Jim
Ryan, Ohio certified consultant, led the workshop. The training was
organized and sponsored by the Tri-County Board of Recovery and Mental
Health Services. Youth teams attending represented We Are the Majority
in Darke County, originated by the Recovery and Wellness Center of
Midwest Ohio and the Big Buddies program in Shelby County.
The youth attendees from Darke County included; Alex Lance, Chloe
Lance, Mikayla Kutter, Kate Burrell, Molly Hunt and Masen Rich, as well
as group leader, Kelly Harrison of Recovery and Wellness Center.
The training focused on techniques for engagement and effectiveness.
The youth began the day with an ice-breaker to get acquainted with
members of other youth teams. The topics that the youth focused
on included; Peer Prevention, Service Learning, Positive Youth
Development, and Youth Empowerment. Jim let the teams through several
games and family groups which caused them to step out of their comfort
zone and share with one another. The teens learned many useful
leadership, and citizenship skills which they are excited to bring back
to their individual organizations.
Any high school student interested in making a difference in the
community and who lives a drug free lifestyle is welcome to contact
Kelly Harrison at the Recovery and Wellness Centers of Midwest Ohio at
937-548-6842 to learn more about how to be a part of “We are the
Majority”.
Respectfully Submitted by Molly Hunt, We are the Majority Peer Leader.
